Hey everyone! I am applying to every DO school I can for sept 07 because first of all I want to be a physician more than anything and second of all because I think the world of the DO philosophy. My question is that I will be a senior this year and I am taking my MCAT next April (which is why I am applying for the following year) and I am planning on getting a research career (possibly Amgen) for the year in between but should I take classes also? I am majoring in chem so I would probably take biochem and maybe human physiology along with genetics or something because I will not have taken any of these. And since my graduating gpa will most likely be a 3.0 (I admit that I put too much time into my ECs and not enough into studying) I'm hoping I could do well in these to show that I can do the work, but I'm not sure if the schools would even look at these grades after I've applied. I was just thinking that it would at least keep my brain moving and learning helpful material! - Any advice would be great. I can't wait to get started!

If you have time to take classes, go a head. But prepare well for MCAT since this will probably make a bigger difference. Also shadow a DO doctors or gain clinical experiences since DO schools are interested in clinical experiences rather than research.

I agree. I was going to tell you not to worry about classes at all...but then I read about the 3.0 GPA. Its not that big a deal, but I suppose if you could get an A or two it would be nice. I would do the Biochem or Genetics. There are ways to report the grades after the app process is already underway. However, if you take the classes in the spring of 07, then that would most likely be too late to report as far as helping you get in or not.

Like Dr. Z said, do well on the MCAT first. The research wil be nice too

Keep in mind, any grades you get for the fall semester won't be final until December, which is very late in the application cycle.

Thanks for the replies! I'm getting really nervous now that I'm reading all these other posts about people applying with MUCH high gpas. Does anyone apply with a 3.0? Am I wasting my time? I want this SOOOOO bad and I think I will still try but maybe I should consider a postbac or masters. yikes!

Im not going to bull**** you. A 3.0 is low, maybe to low but dependent on your MCAT score.
