This question is related to others' questions about applying to transitional year/prelim medicine year programs but is a little different, hence, new thread.
How have others in the past handled applications to the PGY-1 year if they were NOT set on staying in the same town they were in for medical school?
My best case scenario would be to move to whatever city my derm residency will be in for all four years, and second best would be to stay in my current city for intern year and then move to the derm residency city. Does this mean I need to apply for at least one intern year spot (prelim or transitional) in each city where I will be applying for derm? If this is the case, I will be submitting many more applications than the many I'm already sending for derm. Plus, it seems stupid given that I won't even want to go to any PGY-1 interviews in cities where I don't get a derm interview. Is there any way to avoid doing this? What have others done?
Thanks for your help. I don't want to waste any more money than is necessary on applications/interviews for the intern year (since lord knows I'll need it for derm!)...
