Hi All,

I'm very interested in the U.S. MPH schools. However, as a Canadian resident, I'm wondering if there are any schools that are known for accepting significant numbers of international students. I'm not sure if MPH programs show that kind of regional-specific attitude that many med schools have.

Also wondering if I'd be competitive for some of the top-tier schools (again, if they're amenable to international students). I have a 3.5/4.0 GPA (though in my last two years, it's more like 3.7/4.0) in an honours science degree (psychology), a 80+ percentile GRE, lots of previous hospital experience, and am currently employed as a research assistant at a well known cancer centre. Not a terrible applicant I would imagine, but would it be enough to give me an edge to the bigger U.S. schools?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, and I'm only now learning about many of these places!

Hello,

Most of the top-tier U.S. programs attract students from around the nation and internationally. (The smaller, less-well-known programs tend to draw more from the surrounding region.)

It sounds like you would definitely be a competitive candidate at some of the big U.S. schools, particularly if you play up your reserach experience and can formulate a strong statement of interest tailored to the school(s) you wish to attend.

Good luck!

I should add one caveat: funding is usually fairly limited for international students (sometimes even for U.S. citizens!), and some programs are quite expensive (usually $16,000-$30,000 USD/year). It would be wise to look into any scholarships that may be available for Canadians, either through the school or through Canadian sources. Again, good luck!
