Question for to those who have already applied and now know almost everything about the application process:

I will be taking the MCAT exam during July 20th. Is this really late since I will get my scores Aug 20th. However, I will have verified everything and will have my secondary application complete by then?

Also do I need my mcat score before submitting my secondary app?

THANK-YOU !!

It's basically a numbers game at schools with rolling admissions. You compete against more and more people for interview slots as the cycle progresses. So, if you're average on GPA/MCAT, this could hurt you somewhat.

Lies. Nobody knows "everything" about this application process, not even the people who sit on admissions committees!

But to be more helpful, I think that since applying early/late is often under your control you should strive to apply as early as possible. If you can't, then that's that - try to get the rest of your ducks in a row so you're not at a significant disadvantage with time.

That being said, I think that you just want to be complete by the end of August/early September to get a fair shot. My guess/conjecture is that your chances start to decline if you straggle any further past that phase because I would assume that most traditional applicants finish their essays, etc. and have everything sent in before school begins. In this case, you'll be more than fine. Most people who submit in June don't even get their secondaries until mid-late July, and some schools don't even release secondaries until August.

Just make sure you have the rest of your ducks in a row (primary verified, secondaries submitted, letters of recs sent in, etc.) so that when you get your MCAT score in, your horse is off to the races.

Ideally you'd be complete sooner, but it's not the kiss of death to be complete in late August/early September as some on SDN would suggest. After all, I wasn't complete until late August, and I ended up being accepted to 4 schools. FWIW.

I might be considered a regular applicant. I am not exactly sure.
I mean I have a normal GPA like a 3.86 and sGPA of 3.79 (which might be lower b/c this semester to a 3.74 or so). And my EC's are pretty good. Also, I received a pretty competative full scholarship.
Estimated below

Hospital and Clinical Volunteering like 120 hours.
Shadowing 150 hours.
nonclinical volunteering 250 hours.
Volunteer- Research 300 hours (In the process of getting a paper published)
Research for Credit- 135 hours
Paid Research (This Summer)- NIH (will come to about 400 hours or so) (hope to get a paper published)

However, I am not too confident for the MCAT. I just started studying for it and don't think I will be prepared before July. I believe that I might just be able to pull off a 30 hopefully.

Too much research I hope they don't ask me why I didn't consider MD/PHD 😉

wow you blew away my EC's. Great GPA. 30ish MCAT and I don't think you'll meet much resistance.

It puts you at a disadvantage, but its better than taking the MCAT when you arent ready.

It definately makes things harder, just make sure you have everything ready to send when you get your MCAT scores back. I couldn't take my MCAT until August so I applied in Sept with a 3.85gpa, 3.7 sgpa, and 29MCAT and a ton of ECs and got into three schools (despite the nay-saying of SDN bloggers) so I think if you have the choice, apply early, but if not just boost you app as much as possible and hopefully you'll be okay. Good luck!!:luck:

And do well on the actual MCAT. You don't want to bomb it and have to apply again the cycle after.
