Hi All,

Recently, a grade of mine was found to be inaccurate and changed upwards. This will have a non-negligible impact on my class rank, probably moving me from mid 2nd quartile to top 2nd quartile, but possibly moving me to 1st quartile.

The only problem is that the registrar won't re-compute our rankings until August 20th or so. I would then need to meet with the Chairman shortly afterwards to give him my improved rank, get his letter, and probably mail my stuff to the SF Match by August 25th (after which I know there is 2-3 weeks of processing).

On the other hand, I could send my application in by August 5th or so with the incorrect, lower rank.

Is it better to be early, with a lower rank, or to wait it out for the better rank?

How bad is it to send in apps in late August?

Applying August 25th will probably mean you will miss some early Sept deadlines, maybe you can call SF Match and see if you can not have your classrank listed or have it added when grades are computed.

Also maybe you should talk to your school's dean of student affairs.

Thanks for the input. I spoke with the deans, and they basically said they couldn't do anything.

Is the SF Match similar to applying to med school, where there's a big advantage to being early vs. late? When I applied to med school, I turned my application in a month or so later than most, and I understand that this hurt my chances because a lot of the interviews had already been given out. Is SF Match similar?

I applied August 21 or something in 2012 and had no issues... Maybe things have changed drastically ?

So it's not like medical school, where "early" and "late" are both well before the deadline-- some of the programs have deadlines that are September 1st, and you don't want to miss being considered! I'd look at your program list and see-- if all of them have later deadlines then you may be ok waiting. If not, remember it can take up to a week to be even received, and 2-3 weeks to be processed. I can't find a straight answer as to whether they consider the date you are "complete" on sf match, or the date your app has been verified and distributed as the deadline, but you don't want to miss having your application sent to the program because of a grade thing that can be later updated (albeit with some degree of headache).
