Hello everyone!

I am currently enrolled in the Georgetown SMP, and I was originally planning on applying to medical schools during June of 2012. However after talking to some of the faculty members in the Georgetown SMP, they convinced me to apply and so I submitted my AMCAS to a few select schools in late August.

Obviously it would have been beneficial to apply early, but will the fact that I'm in the SMP help schools put aside the fact that I applied late? By applying when I did, I was able to write about the SMP in my secondaries and give them my grade updates in the two medical courses we have taken thus far.

I'm fully prepared to get rejected from the few schools that I did apply to this cycle, but the more I think about it, the more I want to get into medical school this time around and try to defer an acceptance for a year. So I guess I'm just looking for some hope, but any opinions would be appreciated!

Stats:
32 MCAT, 3.35cGPA, 3.2 sGPA, 3.67 GPA in SMP so far, solid EC's, a little lacking in clinical experiences

Thanks!

First, there is definitely a quantifiable advantage to applying early. However, the effect is sometimes overstated and generalized on SDN. I was advised by a couple schools to apply later with more SMP grades, for instance (I went another route, but that's a different story). You won't be 'penalized' per say but as things get later one gets to the point where their interviews may be for the few spots remaining, making things tough. Late August wasn't so late though. The important thing that I can recommend based on reading your post, is that you do not give any schools the idea that you are going into this cycle thinking you want to get in and defer. It is possible that schools will not take you if they are aware that it is not your intention to be a part of this class, but the next. Also, out of curiosity, what are you planning to defer for?
