Hi everyone,

I am thinking about submitting my application for pod-school this year, but I realize that I'm pretty late in the cycle.

Here's my deal:

2nd year applying to med school, got waitlisted last year and got reeeeally close to getting in. I was going to apply pod school last year, but thought I'd give med school another shot since it was so close. I applied this year (EDIT: to MD programs) and am 2 months out post-interview. It's late in the cycle and schools are slow to get back to me about interviews. I really need to be back in school again as I can't stand working my job for another year when I know I can achieve more. I know I may get some flack for treating this as a backup, but I am fully informed on what pods do and their importance (Type I Diabetic and have a good relationship with a couple of my pods).

31 MCAT
3.75 GPA
- Public health major, medical ethics minor
- Current research coordinator for U. Washington dept. of surgery for the past 2 years since graduation
- Lots of surgical undergrad research
- Current volunteer at a community health clinic for homeless youth
- Have a ton of MD physician shadowing hours
- Have shadowed pods before and am going to continue shadowing in the near future

So while I am confident in my stats, I just want to know if these can overshadow a late application? How late is too late? I intend to get my app in before 4/1, which is the priority date for CSPM. I plan on applying to AZPod, CSPM, Western, and Rosalind.

Thanks for your input!

You will be fine 👍

You should consider DO if you have not tried that yet.

I would apply ASAP! You'll get an awesome scholarship to CSPM if they have any more left.

Thank you. I thought about it, but decided against it. Mainly because DO and MD are virtually indistinguishable nowadays. Most DOs nowadays don't even use what they learned in manual manipulations. If my heart were in the DO philosophies, and I knew I'd actually be using them when I was done with school, then I would definitely go to school for it. I recognize the irony of not wanting to treat the DO school as backup to achieve the same means of treating patients, but using the DPM field as that; it's too difficult to write about my take on this without digging myself in a deeper hole.

Thanks, would that be the 12.5K that's listed in their info pamphlets? Is that where you are going? CSPM is probably my first choice as I'm a West Coast guy 😎

I called around to all of the schools about a week and a half ago. All of them said they weren't half full yet except AZPod had filled 18 out of 30 slots. I have a 3.68 GPA and taking my MCAT in March. They encouraged me to apply now and said it wasn't late, and that they still do interviews in June. I wouldn't wait THAT late but I also don't think that just because you don't apply at the beginning of the cycle means that you have no shot. With your stats you are probably a shoo in anywhere anytime.

Yeah I spoke with reps from Kent, Western, and Scholl and they said that they have interviews into June. I was very surprised at that, but stoked at the same time to know that I still have a shot.

I'm curious, what did the rep from Samuel Merritt say when u asked him about open slots for the 2013 cycle?

Thank!!

I think you are ok. I literally just submitted and I'm waiting on my last transcript to be received! Good luck!

@ Puget

Yeah I am going to CSPM. Yes, I believe you would qualify for the 12.5k scholarship.

I'm still a little confused why you decided against DO? You tried applying TWICE, which seems like a clear commitment to medical school, and your MCAT is slightly low for MD schools.

Anyway, I called the pod schools earlier and they all have room. I have an interview coming up for CSPM, and I was eligible for a 15k scholarship, with slightly lower stats than yours. You will be fine for that.

You are supposed to be confused. As I said in my post, it's kind of difficult for me to explain.

In my defense of my MCAT, anything above 30 (if you are just looking at MCAT alone) is good enough to get an interview UW since I'm in-state. I got an interview last year and came close, which is why I applied again. If I was crushed with no interviews last year, I would not have tried again. I also got an interview at San Diego as OOS too. So as far as MCAT goes, it's a moot point. It's not all about stats, right?
