Applying MD/PhD Help PI told me to write my own letter of rec

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Yes, it happens all the time.

Here's the formula:

I am pleased to have the opportunity to write a letter on behalf of Hellohelpwithfuture (AMCAS # 1234567). I first met Hello [number] [months/years] ago [circumstances around how you met or began collaborating]. Go on to describe other interactions you've had (e.g. you started by taking a class with the PI and then joined the lab or you started in the lab and then he became your thesis advisor or whatever).

Next paragraph, describe the specific skills you acquired in the lab and what has been accomplished while you were there. If things have not gone well, say so and then say how you have bounced back from disappointments.

Next paragraph, describe your personality and characteristics. Are you tenacious in the way you try to master new techniques, are you creative in finding solutions to problems, and you a team player who joins in and helps everyone who is having trouble or the ringleader of social gatherings of lab team? Offer two or three characteristics and perhaps a little story about something you did in lab.

Close with something about the PI's number of years of experience at School A (and School B, if applicable) and how the PI is happy that you are applying to medical school and how you are someone the PI would like to have take care of his own family someday.

Sincerely,
Signature....
