I took my DAT july 5th, im a very nervous test taker and had an issue with the white board (wasnt given an eraser) i know all of that is no excuse but i am an extremely hard worker and very determined i studied everyday for month and a half anywhere 6-10 hrs or so i was doing amazing on practice tests and felt ready but didnt get the same scores on the real thing :-(

bio: 16
chem: 18
ochem: 22
RC: 18
math: 17
PAT 23

i really messed up bio and chem wasnt hard but i was running out of time because i spent too much time on bio. rc i was scoring 19-21 on practices but anyway, im a bio major 3.7 overall gpa and 3.7 sci gpa. interned 3 dentists, did research, a lot of community service, very involved on campus, VP of sorority, lots of letter of recommendations etc.
I am 100% taking the DAT again in october because i know i have it in me to do much much better, plus i got the nervous experience out of the way. I am starting internship at orthodontist this week and very excited! I am almost done with my application (by the end of this week) but should take 4-6 weeks to process i assume... am i applying late? retaking in october also very late? do i still have a shot getting into some schools

let me know what you think please! thankyou

It's not too late for most schools but you do need to hurry. I was on the phone with AADSAS today and they are backed up. Here's some inside info which should give an indication of the total time for processing...

First, it takes 5-7 days after AADSAS receives your transcript for it to get posted to your account as "received". Not sure if it's 5-7 business days or 5-7 regular days. Either way, what a joke.

Second, after all transcripts are received, then your application is deemed "complete" (assuming you already e-submitted) and placed in the queue for processing.

Third, the queue is backed up by 2.5 weeks as of today. They are currently processing applications that were deemed "complete" on June 22. WTF? The AADSAS person said if your application was placed in the queue today, then it could be a good 4-5 weeks before it will begin the processing.

Fourth, it takes about a week to process your application which merely involves checking your grades and calculating your GPAs.

Fifth, after your application is processed it is sent to your schools via both electronic and regular mail. Some schools won't review your application until they receive the hard copy. So add a few days here for these type of schools.

Thus, if you add up all the time, it can be a good 7-8 total weeks after you e-submit and request your transcripts to be sent. If this were done today, then schools will receive applications at the end of August/early September.

uy okay thanks for replying-- im reviewing it and editing my p.statement so i can have it out hopefully by tomorrow.. latest wednesday! i already sent transcript stuff beginning of june so at least that is out of the way

Thanks for the scoop LetsGo2DSchool. This is pretty helpful even though it doesn't help the process go faster. It seemed like they posted the status of my transcript as "received" very late. It was sent on the 20th, probably got there a few days later and posted as "received" on the 30th.

TMS,

It is true that your biology is a bit low, but, don't fall into the SDN trap. Meaning, that you believe you need 24's to get into dental school.

Your GPA is competitive and your PAT shows that you have some skills. Submit your application and retake the DAT (as you were planning). The average DAT score for matriculation is 19. You may get some interviews regardless of your DAT.

It's less paperwork to do later anyway. Basically, there is no reason to not get your application in, unless you might not apply.

Also be very polite and respectful with the AADSAS people. There is a special AADSAS "applicant code of conduct" field in the application which the schools will see. Thus, if you piss off an AADSAS agent or repetitively annoy them with unnecessary redundant phone calls, then he/she may add a negative comment entry to your app.

I'm not sure how this plays into the admissions process but it's probably something you want to avoid.

If only i could take care if this process myself. The more i think the more i realize AADSAS is useless and wants my money.
