applying out of a BS/MD program

just curious, is it possible to apply out of a BS/MD 7 year program? has anyone done this before and if so how did it work with the school you formerly were committed to?

I have zero experience with this situation, however I imagine this would not be such a good idea. How would you explain this to schools you're applying to? If you told the truth, I think that would immediately raise up the red flag. Why would they want to accept you if you already have a guaranteed spot? It doesn't make sense to me.

Only time I've seen this is when the students have absolutely rocked the MCAT and had a legitimate shot at much better schools. The downside being (at least for the programs I saw) you gave you your guaranteed spot by applying out.

Some schools you don't lose your spot (USCD) so they would be good ones to do it from.

generally speaking, you are allowed to apply out of most bs/md programs, although this obviously may vary so check. In most cases, you will certainly lose your spot in the med school that was attached to the program, but usually, you can still apply to the med school as a regular med applicant. Only a few programs that I know of (u of rochester for one) allow you to apply to other med schools and still keep your spot in the program. Also, if you are applying out of a 7 (or 6 year program), you probably will have to do the classes that would have been omitted for program members, just like any other undergrad.

Im in a BS/MD program. If I choose to apply out of the program, I will loose my 'guaranteed' spot, but will still be allowed to apply as a regular applicant to the same school. Unless I rock the MCAT (35 or more) I'm not applying out. In a bs/md program, you are not required to shadow doctors/research/etc. although it is recommended. If you choose to apply out, you must make sure you have the same amount as other traditional applicants.

Its too much of a hassle to apply out, unless you are 1) sure you dont want to go to the medical school that the program is with or 2) you rocked the MCAT and have pretty good extracurriculars.

i was just considering it because we are required to research or shadow a doctor each semester. I probably need to see about the regular undergrad classes compared to the ones I get out of though

youre required to do those things to be competitive anyway

i assume you are in the Bachelor/MD program at UMiami? You don't like their medical school? It's in a great location and the hospital is hugeee.

i really like the undergrad so far, i havent seen that much about the med school yet so im not really sure how ill like it? i just wanted to see if I had other options or whatever.

Most likely I'll want to stay in Miami though
