I go to a mid-tier MD school. Interested in applying to psychiatry. Step 1 score was a 22x. Haven't taken Step 2 yet (will take in three weeks).

I'm planning on applying to psychiatry this fall and did a few electives in psychiatry during M3 year. I have one M4 psychiatry elective lined up, but was not able to get into any sub-Is at my school due to everything filling up. Currently have a bunch of electives this semester (e.g., psych, research, IM electives). Will not having a sub-I this semester shoot myself in the foot?

You’re not shooting yourself in the foot because programs understand there are often more applicants than spots for sub I’s.

you’ll have about a 95% chance of matching with your step 1 score, so as long as you apply to a realistic and broad set of programs you should be fine

Have u reached out to the Deans to explain the situation? They are normally really proactive in accomodating students when it comes to their specialty of choice. Last year someone switched careers last minute and a Dean called up students filling up the Rotation spot to make one of them drop because they have a rough idea what everyone's interests are. Also great choice switching into psych, gonna be a chill ride ahead

I'm in the exact same boat lol. My saving grace is I was thrown into the intern role on my core and my LOR writer from that core is going to be speaking to this. I also didn't feel the need to do an away solely based on the fact that COVID messed up my schedule and I got unlucky in the schedule lottery.
