Hi.
I am currently applying to medical schools... however, if that fails I want to do dentistry.... so how does that work?
Can I apply to dentistry now, as well? Or do i have to wait until I get rejected to all of the medical schools first?
When can I take the DATs? When can I apply to Dental schools?

Yes, you can apply to dental schools now. Application has been open for 3 months almost. And you can take the DAT now as well (if you are ready). The cycle is approaching late stages so you have to do it quickly to have greater chance as it is rolling admissions.
As an alternative, I would suggest you waiting till the next year, shadowing a dentist (recommended/required by most schools), doing some other stuff and applying early next cycle. It depends on your stats and your situation.

You can apply to dental and medical schools at the same time. Some schools have application deadlines in December. The latest application deadlines are in February but by that time most of the seats are taken. You will have very small chance of getting in. DAT is offered 3 times a day 5 days a week.

You can apply to both at the same time, you have to mark that on your application though, so when and if you get an interview at a dental school and they ask you why dentistry over medicine, your answer would be pretty much impossible if your applying to both in the same cycle. DAT is offered all the time but its already getting late in the admissions process and youll have to study for at least a month hard for the DATs. I would take this time to shadow a dentist if you are serious about dentistry, Im praying your reasoning isnt because you didnt make it into med schools so why not dentistry, if thats the case, you wont get into dentistry either.

You need to consider your career choice first. You should not use another career as your backup choice. This is not fair to all the people who are trying and have considered dentistry for quite some time... go volunteer and research about the career... You are pissing many off here. Because getting into dental school is just as hard as medical school, and much harder than low tier medical schools.

What make you think that DS are MD schools' backup?👎

You know absolutely nothing about the application procedures needless to say the dental profession. Most pre-dents already turned in their primary and secondary applications -- first-come, first-served, just like the restaurants and the med schools.

if you really must, go to ADA website and register for DAT via prometric. i think its similar to how you registered for your MCAT. but just b/c u just took your MCAT, dont think the DAT is similar. you still need to study, ESPECIALLY for the Perceptual Ability section (it comes with lots of practice!).

Yeah, MCAT =/= DAT. Different style for the sciences and physics is replaced with the algebras, geometry, pre-calc stuff.

Ahh.... The PAT can come to you without practice. But only way to find out is to do some practice problems.

99% of people, Im betting cant just "pick up" on the PAT portion. You need practice, lets not kid ourselves and think you can just walk in and smoke the PAT portion with hardly any practice.

I agree with you sorta.... a lot of practice is necessary for some while others only need some practice. For me (and surely more then 1% of other DAT takers) the only practice really needed was to go through the directions and find a method for each section. I was fine after KBB, and I only used Barrons because I enjoyed the PAT stuff so much. (Hey it was better studying for gen chem.) And I don't think KBB counts as "lots" of practice especially when some people use it and CDP (which I think is almost overkill).
