What happens when you apply to a program who is part of the match program and then another school that is non-match. Do you find out if you get into the non-match before the match schools? What happens if you match, and also get into the non-match program. Can you get out of the program you matched with to go to the non-match?

Thanks in advance for any help 👍

you are supposed to find out about nonmatch first. but there is no rule on this. nonmatch programs know you are probably not just looking at them and should let you know if you are in before the match rank order list deadline. once you send in the list, all your nonmatch options are out the window.

NOPE not unless you want to make some serious enemies and perhaps get into some legal trouble. submission of your rank order list is a binding contract as I understand it. once you send in the list, you MUST withdraw your application from all non match positions.

As said by Texas_DDS, most Match programs let you if you know if you are accepted there well in advance of match submission date.

A general rule I've heard regarding specialties that use match (OMFS, pedo, ortho, etc) is this: since most programs in those specialties participate in match and since you usually have to give a non-match program a response (i.e. say "yes" to an acceptance) before match is submitted, applying to a match program is advised IF that program is one of your top couple. Then is you get accepted, it is where you really want to be anyway. BUT if the program is tentatively lower on your list, being accepted there is good and bad - good cause it's a seat, but bad cause you'd have to write off the match programs that you make prefer. That leads to deciding if you are going to turn it down hoping for a seat in a match program you'd rather attend....and so on.

I guess it just comes down to how confident you are about yourself as an applicant and what you think your chances are. Personally, my top choices for ortho are all match schools, so I probably won't apply to any non-match programs. Hope that all helped some.

what if u accept a non match and then match somewhere and then turn down the 1st offer? What is wrong with this idea...besides looking like a schmuck to the 1st program?

In your agreement to Match, one of the provisions is if you are accepted into a program not participating in Match, you must decide whether to go there before submitting a rank list. So, if you decide to go to the non-match school you are not allowed to submit a rank list or participate in Match. (I'm learning this as I go along.) Because of this, I doubt I'll apply to any non-Match schools either. Out of curiosity though, what Ortho programs don't participate in Match.

Rochester, Minnesota, Tufts, BU, and I think Loma Linda. I can't think of any others, but there may be some that I don't know about.

I wonder if you can apply to GPR and specialty at the same time. Is there any ristriction on this.
Excuse me if there's a similar post somewhere.
