Applying to away rotations (Sub-I's) for different specialties? Please help!

So I am in a precarious position where I am pretty interested in 2 competitive fields in which it is typically recommended that students do an "away rotation". I plan to do home sub-i's in these two to help me narrow down to my final choice, but the main issue is that I won't be able to complete these until late-April/May/June. I read somewhere that VSAS is due sometime in March/early April, so I'm not sure how I can even begin to schedule aways in something I haven't ~formally~ rotated in.

Is it possible to just to apply to aways for BOTH, and then withdraw all my away applications for specialty Y if i have definitively decided on specialty X after rotating in them?

I'm a complete noob as to VSAS/aways/sub-i's so any advice is greatly appreciated
