From the subject, this probably doesn't sound like it belongs on SDN. 😉 Anyway, I'm actually a current med student, but I'd like take some time off to attend business school. I have to get in first, of course. I found SDN to be a very helpful resource while I was applying to medical school, and I was just wondering (as I know there are some business people out there in SDNland) whether there are any similar forums for business school applicants.

Thanks.

At ucla you can get an mba w/your md in a total of 5 years. Check to see what other schools have this maybe you can tranfer if your school doesn't offer this.

I don't see the benefit of attending business school in the middle of medical school. I think you would be better off waiting until you have completed your training. If you are truly interested in a business career, it seems to me that it would be better to complete an MBA after your medical degree or, if you have no real work experience, wait until you have gained some real world experience.

I see your point, and I'm considering that as well. However, the reason I want to attend business school now is because I think I might not be interested in practicing at all. I would still like to use my medical knowledge, perhaps as a hospital administrator or to work in healthcare policy, though.

I know Penn (Wharton) has some sort of medical-oriented curriculum, so that might be ideal for me.

Deuce, thanks for the reply, but I don't think I'd want to transfer... 🙂

How the hell did you get accepted with that attitude. I though medschool interviews were designed to weed out people who did not want to do anything but medicine.

I originally really did want to practice, and I'm still holding out hope that I do. However, I don't think that everyone that goes to medical school has to want to do clinical medicine. Perhaps everyone should have a desire to do work involving medicine, and I certainly plan to put my medical knowledge to work, as I said. But in my school, there are people who want to "just" do biomedical research, and so are here getting their MD. I don't see my situation as very different. I, as they, want to contribute to medicine. However, I don't think that by seeing patients day in and day out I would necessarily be utilizing my personal skills to benefit the most people.

Does that make sense?

Yea, but for your peers wanting to BS research (funny how that turns out), shouldn't they be doing and MD/PhD?

I think some are, but some aren't. I'm not too clear on which ones want to do just research, but I guess my point was that a medical degree is more multi-purpose than one might think at first blush.

On this topic, I am wondering if anybody has any information on what types of careers are available for MD/MBA's? How competitive? Average lifestyle? Compensation? What about combining finance work with an MD? I have 3+ years experience in finance prior to applying to med school. I have every intention of giving up the business world for clinical medicine, but I am curious about stuff that I could potentially do on the side to make extra money and cushion my lifestyle or where doctors go into business when they completely leave clinical medicine behind.
