Okay this is my situation:

I will be taking Organic chem 2 in the Spring of '09, and Biochem in the Summer of '09. I am trying to apply to dental school in June '09 to get into the class of Fall '10. Can I still apply without having completed my Biochem class? I will be taking it in the summer but the class is not completed when I apply.

Any ANY information regarding the process of applying will help 😀

Thanks!

As long as you have your biochem completed by the spring of '10, you are totally fine!

Kind of a related question...I know people have said things about some schools that like to base some aspects of their decision-making on experience with upper-level bio classes (particularly heard this about Nova). Problem is, application time for fall 2010 happens before then (I'll only have about 4 upper-level bios by then)...so how can schools judge candidates on not taking classes they haven't had a chance to yet? I plan on taking immunology, histology, comparative anatomy, and a couple others, but not until after I apply....

I dunno, some schools are finicky like that. They want to see how you did in the upper level biology. And if they are a school that stresses that, they will tell you in the interview.

The important thing is that you have your pre-reqs done and that you do well on the DAT. Upper division bio classes can strengthen your application but schools know that you can not take those until later in college. So while some schools may like to see upper division classes, you will be fine if you do very well in your pre-reqs and DAT.

but doesn't the pre-req's require the upper bio class and biochemistry?

So even though I have not taken the class, I can still apply to dental school?

Many schools will allow you to apply regardless of which classes you have finished, as long as you finish the prerequisite courses before you matriculate. You dont need them in most instances to apply to dental school. That said however, some schools require you to have a certain percentage of prerequisite courses completed before applying. (check with individual schools) and it is a good idea anyway to have as many prereqs completed as possible before you apply. In any case, they will help you with the DAT. Hope that helps.
