Hi everyone.
I am just curious what are your stats for applying to Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona. 😕

Here you go...I'll start.

GPA: 3.66 science, 3.71 overall
MCAT: 27 (VR:8, PS:9, BS:10)
ECs: NCAA Div I Athletics
LA Free Clinic
2 researches in physiology (plus presentation at national conference)
etc....

Also, why would you want to apply to DO school over MD schools? Is that simply because of the numbers? Or is that because you guys truly love the philosophy of DO? Or little bit of both?
I think in my case it is little bit of both. But since my primary goal is to be a doctor and work in a clinic so that I can have direct contact with patients, I don't mind if my diploma says DO instead of MD. And since I am from eastern background, and I have understanding in chinese medicine, I like DO's philosophy of treating patients as a whole, for this is what chinese medicine forcuses on 😀
(also, another DO school in Cal does not accept international students 😳 )
Please let me hear what you guys think about these 😎

Cheerz...

My stats were nearly identical to yours (assuming you take my best MCAT and not most recent 🙄 ). I was offered an interview there but turned it down when I was accepted at KCOM. Being that KCOM is the most wonderful DO school out there (the general concensus among the SDNers), how could I pass it up?

A successful cardiologist I work with went to Pomona.

To answer your other question, a little of both as well. However, I do have an undergraduate and graduate degree that mesh better with DO's. In other words, it was in me all the time, I just didn't know about DO's like many people.

I am also majoring in ex. physiology too! I guess it is in me too! 😀
Btw, how does KCOM differ from the one in Pomona? If I know I want to work in CA, then do you think it may be a better idea to go the one in Pomona?

If you want to do residency in CA and/or Practice in California, then you might want to weigh WesternU/COMP more heavily. If you really want to get a more "holistic" approach in osteopathic medicine, maybe KCOM would be better. I went to WesternU/COMP and the OMM department is very good, but I didn't really get a holistic learning vibe. Maybe KCOM is better at that if you know you want to do primary care, etc.

Awesome...another exercise phys! All of the schools are good is what I have learned. Just do well on the boards.

Here is why I chose KCOM:
1) Wanted to isolate myself in a peaceful country setting where I wasn't constantly in traffic...I am just burned out from the Phoenix Metro area.

2) KCOM was a place where I felt like I could maintain my health better. I liked their gym. I know you can go jogging/biking anywhere, but I just kind of liked the idea of having the Thousand Hills Park to get away from things.

3) I can walk/bike to school.

4) Still Well program I thought was a cool play on words.

5) Only have to be there for 2yrs. Then I can choose from Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Michigan, Missouri, New Jersey, and Utah for 3rd and 4th yr. This will breathe new life and excitement halfway through medical school.

6) These other locales might actually be beneficial for getting your foot in the door at a residency location somewhere else.

I know you said you want to practice in CA. That is a long time away. I would let your medical edu and residency take you to other parts of the country. Why not? I am sure you can always come back to CA when all is said and done and still find a job. 🙂
