My parents have been divorced for 10+ years and I haven't had contact with my father for 5-6 years. My mom claims me as a dependent and our household income is much below the FAP cutoff. However, I know that AAMC requires financial information from both parents.

Has anyone in a similar situation successfully applied for FAP? Did you file an appeal? What was the process and what documents did they request?

Yeah you just have to write a letter explaining your situation. They’re really accommodating.

I am currently going through the same situation, I would really appreciate some advice as well.

Hey, so I kind of went through the process. You send them an email describing your situation, based on that they do a preliminary judgment on whether your reasoning is good enough. If so, they send you a form to fill out to further describe your situation. You also need to have someone vouching for your situation (family member, teacher, counselor, lawyer, etc).

Note that I decided not to go through with the entire process.

Why did you decide not to go through with the process?

My estrangement was legit and my lawyer was willing to write the letter. However, I was worried that my father would find out and tell his lawyer to tell the AAMC that I was lying or something like that, or just make some sort of claim. It's a huge pride thing for him. I just didn't want to be in that situation and be under investigation.

I’m very sorry to hear that.
