I work as a paraprofessional in Special Ed at a school. I make $18/hr in a high COL area and need to make more money, so I am taking classes to become a certified teacher.

I am still thinking about DO. I would apply this June. Is it bad to still be taking teacher education classes during the app cycle in case I don't get into med school?

Am I hosed because I am taking a couple of teacher education classes this spring? Is it to the point where you think I shouldn't apply?

I appreciate any insight you may have! Thank you in advance.

No, not at all

Once upon a time, medical schools loved educators who were employed in K-12 for a significant period of time, especially those doing Teach for America or CityYear/Americorps. We need an updated WAMC, but I'm not worried about you taking teacher certification/continuing education courses.

It's not Teach for America, but my school is very low-income. My district has hosted Teach for America educators at this site in the past.

Does your answer change if I roll the courses into a Master's in Special Ed for financial aid purposes?

The only question is "why do that if you are committed to a career in medicine?"

From my perspective, it is because it is extremely hard to get into med school and I want to be prepared if I don't get in.

I definitely see why a school would raise their eyebrows at it though, hence the question.

I appreciate your input. 🙂
