Hi,
So I've always wanted to become a physician and I'm applying to DO schools this upcoming cycle...but stats wise I'm not a very competitive candidate and I have a feeling my chances of acceptance to DO will be low/limited. In case I don't get accepted into a DO school I've also been considering podiatry as a second option and I was just wondering if it looks bad to apply to both at the same time? Some schools I'm interested in for DO also have podiatry programs but is it weird to apply to both programs during the same cycle? Similarly, is it bad to apply to a DO school as well as their post-bac or masters program at the same time?

DMU will not let you apply to both their DO and DPM program the same year. Post-bac/MS is different. They actually encourage you to apply to both, like LMU, Midwestern, LECOM, PCOM, etc.

From what I hear don't apply to pod programs and DO programs at the same school in the same cycle. Some of the prof interview both candidates. If you show up for DO and say I love DO so much thats the only thing I can see myself doing... You get rejected... Then you're offered a DPM interview and its the same interviewer. What a pickle you would be in. Also, stats would be helpful because then others can suggest certain which DO programs to apply to. Most of the DO programs with the Pods are higher stat/mcat schools anyways so it may not be wise to even apply to their DO program.

Many DO programs with DPM programs share basic science professors for preclinical. Should you happen to land interviews to both and have the same interviewer then you're SOL for programs.

Apply DO first, apply DPM if you don't get in and have a change of heart of wanting to be a physician (MD/DO).

In my first block of med school, a guy dropped out 3-4 weeks in because he was accepted to the DPM program that he wanted to go to in the first place. I don't guess it's that uncommon.
