hello, I have some questions 🙂

What is the strategy when you get into internship program and plan to apply for residency? Do you apply right away when you just start internship? ( because internship usually start July 1st and application deadline is around Sep-Oct. Considered this, one would only have 2 months internship experience more than those who dont do internship) or should you wait for next year cycle after you finish the internship? Will there be any preference for picking applicant based on this factor?

Also with only 2 months in the internship program before the application cycle, how should one approach to ask for letter of recommendation from the program you are doing internship? I just feel that it might be too soon to ask for the letter when you only start for 1 month.

Thank you

Apply right away...DO NOT waste a year... Ask for a letter of recommendation in early to mid August...later if the programs you're applying to allow it

I had to do this in my GPR, and it was a little awkward because they'd known me all of 5 weeks...but they've done it before, they understand your position...they want you to match somewhere also...so suck it up and ask

The real hope is that come oct/nov/dec when the program you've interviewed at calls your current RD/PD and asks what they think of you that you get a glowing review...that's going to be more important than your standard boiler plate letter

A program director talked to us about that once...said that people will often write about what you will do during your internship year and a lot of times they would call your program if they were interested in you. Your program should be used to writing letters early. Don't wait a year! Get after it!
