Hey guys,

So I've read a few threads about dual applying which the consensus that it's best not to apply to the same institution for both specialities. However, my question is, if I'm really bent on one hospital, would applying to two specialities but only going to one of the interviews still carry the same risk as if I went to both?

Why are you bothering to apply to both if you're only going to go to one interview (presuming you would have gotten invites to both)?

You won't match if you don't interview.

Sorry should have been more clear. I'm somewhat geographically limited and applying to one competitive speciality and thus applying to the other as backup. Since there's a decent amount of overlap between the hospitals, I would apply to both and if I get an invite for my competitive specialty, I would attend that and cancel the other one.

Gotcha.

There really is no way to know how applications are reviewed.

If the departments are disparate (ie, Rad Onc and General Surgery) there probably isn't a lot of cross-talk between them and they would be unlikely to find out.

Bottom line is that many competitive specialities know you will have a back up plan (and even expect it) and its not a problem to be applying for another field. The problem is for the back-up field.
