Hey wanted to know how many of you are applying with the minimum requirements.

I am applying next cycle and by May I will have completed the second semester of Bio, Orgo, and Physics all with labs. I plan to continue to take other classes like Biochem, microbio, etc throughout the application period. I also plan to take my DATs in July. Assuming I do extremely well in all of those are my chances good or would I be better off waiting until the following cycle to apply?

Your chances depend on your grades, DAT scores, etc. But I can tell you this....I'm about to go on my third interview and at each school they really talked alot about taking upper level bio courses. I personally thought it was ridiculous that they advised me to take more when I already have 80+ hrs of science and 40+ hrs advanced science. But thats what it was like. One woman that interviewed me was like "Well I see you've taken biochem I and II, embryo, cell bio, a&p I and II, and micro. You know you should really take histo and probably an upper level physiology course as well." I thought "Are you kidding me???" But hey if you rock the sciences on the dat, which I kinda did (bio-24, ochem-22, gchem-18, dunno bout that one), then you should prove to them that you can competently handle an intense science curriculum.

Cool. So I still can apply and have a chance with killer grades and DATs. Besides, I will be taking more courses, it's just that I wouldn't have many completed by application period. By the time of martriculation I would have plenty of sciences.

bare bones for me in terms of science courses...

Well that wouldn't apply to because I have a bachelor's degree... I'm doing a post bacc and will only have the basic sciences by this coming May.

With close to 6K applicants that are non biology majors, it is safe to assume that there will be plenty of applicants that are applying with "minimum requirements".

Yeah, im a Business major and didn't really decide to apply to dental school until Feburary of this year. I took Spring and Summer term to get some sciences done but when I submitted to aasas the only science pre req classes I had take are GenChem 1 & 2, 1 bio, physiology, and 1 ochem. I took the dat on August 22nd and got an interview at Buffalo a week later. I haven't heard back from any other schools though and I was thinking possibly because of my lack of science classes that might be holding me back. But hey!, one for one so far, so i'd say it's definatly not impossible. I'm just hoping for some post-Dec love.

My bro actually created a post about this back before I even knew what SDN was, so maybe that old post could help you out a bit.

Hope that helps, I've pretty much gone through what you have or will be going through.. If you got any questions let me know. I didn't do it alone though, my brother was a huge help. He basically guided me through the whole thing. If I had to do it on my own I would have been totally lost.
