Hey all, quick question. I have projected that I will graduate (microbio major) spring 2012. I plan on submitting my application June 2011, but I will have JUST finished up all my prereqs and the rest of my science courses will be taken that summer/following year (my school is on the quarter system).

Is this a good idea? I know people say to update the adcoms with your GPA every quarter but does anyone actually do this? If so, does it actually work?

that is the norm dude. There is a spot to list future classes on application. Most schools want a final transcrpt before you start to make sure you didn't fluck like 10 classes post acceptance.

I'm a non traditional applicant. I applied and got in with just the minimal pre reqs. It really is ok if you've just done the pre reqs...if they wanted more, they'd have more requirements.

You Know, I was wondering about this very same issue. I keep hearing people say that pre-meds should take more science classes (upper levels) beyond the pre-reqs...however I will most likely only have the pre-reqs done and the 2 extra classes my state school required. Is there a rule of thumb for how many classes outside of the pre-reqs you should take? I dont want to get hammered in an interview or screened out for not having extra classes....

I had this same issue come up on the forums before. I think the minimum prereqs are sufficient since that's what's listed as an application requirement. Others pulled the bull about how it would "look" better to take more. I'm sure that someone with a 3.7 and min prereqs isn't going to get bumped for a 3.65 that took a couple more classes. That seems like an actionable claim could be made.

best advice is to ask the admissions office and inform them if they will advise you for your situation.
most schools have a couple of upper division classes that will boost your chances anatomy, biochem, and histology at OSU.

People get in with pre-reqs only all the time. I've never seen a particular need to study biochem or any of these other courses except that they make life easier on you.

It never once came up in any of my interviews. I applied to MD and DO schools. I honestly don't think it was looked at negatively but who knows. I got accepted and that's all that matters. I think there are plenty of non traditional applicants, especially at DO shools, that have only taken the pre reqs and are doing fine.
