Just wanted to see once again what you guys thought of this...since I've had no luck in setting up any observerships in my location (doing it elsewhere is not possible for me)!! Considering the recent stats of matched applicants, there doesn't seem to be much competition, excluding the prestigious programs. So my question is...how much of a handicap is not having a US psych LOR? Would high board scores make up for this deficiency? Should I go ahead and apply (I don't have a second choice specialty) or go for prelim med or transitional just so I can get some psych electives and so letters for the next cycle? This seems so desparate and round about way of getting to psych!! I do have 2 US letters (rads, other) and 1 great psych letter from Germany. I would apply very, very broadly but would like a program with both bio and psychanalytic teaching components. Any thoughts on this long winded question? Also, would a letter from a psychiatrist not in the academia carry any weight?
