Hi all,

I'm going to post with as little guiding info as possible to get the purest responses. However, I am:

  • A NY state resident
  • Currently without school debt
  • able to envision myself happy at any of these schools
What would you all recommend from among:
  • CCOM
  • LMU-DCOM
  • WVSOM
  • MSUCOM (with possible DO-PhD)
  • KCU-Joplin

I'm sorry, but little info gets you the most generic response. You should provide as much info as possible. Have you been accepted to any of these schools? I'm guessing not since you don't know if you're doing a DO-PhD, yet.

Edit: okay, I just looked and you have said you were accepted. Why would you do a DO-PhD? Do you plan to do research in medicine? If not, don't go. I would choose KCU.

Hiya,

Accepted to all of these. DO-PhD confirmation comes through in March, but I made it through the first few steps.

I am indeed interested in pursuing a career as a physician scientist. Do you have any information or opinions on the new Joplin campus at KCU?

If money didn't exist....1) MSU and 2) ccom

I would have probably say attend kcu ( main campus), but I know nothing about the Joplin campus.

Let me add that I have worked in neuro research for years and have always been interested in neurology or neurosurgery. Of course this might change during school, but would any of these give me a real advantage in terms of pursuing these fields?

Neurology isn't competitive. If you do about average you'll likely match. Neurosurgery, on the other hand, is competitive, especially for DOs. Of the 5600 DO grads in 2016, 13 matched AOA Neurosurgery and 0 matched acgme neurosurgery. There are 11 AOA neurosurgery residencies and 7 of them are in pre-accreditation for the acgme merger. MSU has 2 NS residencies (one pre accreditation and the other one didn't apply), and ccom has 1. You can look up AOA residencies here. http://opportunities.osteopathic.org. It's uncertain if these residencies will survive or not. Anyway, having a PhD will likely help with a competitive field. How much I don't know.

You may also like neuroradiology (a fellowship of radiology) or neuropathology (a fellowship of pathology).

There are many factors to look at here. If you go for a DO-PhD, then you are looking at 8 years of medical school and research AFTER you're bachelors degree. Then you still have to attend a residency. However, if your interest is neurosurgery then I would say that your PhD won't help you much simply because most significant NS academic hospitals will recruit top PhD students from around the nation. There are HUNDREDS of DO-PhD/MD-PhD students graduating each year. Is it impossible? NO..but I wouldn't put a cent towards you getting into that kind of residency. Nothing against you and you could certainly prove me wrong, but I would venture to say if you are competitive for that kind of residency, then you should be competitive enough to attend a MD school. CCOM and MSUCOM will drive your debt sky high, ESPECIALLY if you are doing a PhD (unless you have scholarships or grants). KCU is a very reputable school and it much cheaper.

Pretty easy. Do you like that casserole they call Chicago pizza, vs covered dishes, vs barbecue?

Is KCU Joplin even taking apps?

I suggest: CCOM = MSUCOM > WVSOM > LMU > >KCU-J.
