In light of some recent events I believe it would be good to have a discussion on how those seeking professional schooling, licensure and or credibility should act on the internet.

First I would say that as a rule of thumb, you should not be "acting" on the internet. Do not have a persona, and carry yourself how you would in a room full of strangers. It's important to always speak in context to the discussion you are having. For instance, sarcasm is often acceptable in conversation so long as it is not facetious and within some relevance to the topic. To not do so is considered trolling.

Anonymity- is this truly possible on the internet?

Actually, sarcasm with some relevance to the topic is the highest and most sophisticated form of trolling.

Being facetious is for novices.

We'll now and forever more refer to him as Dr. Seuss.

as a homage to Dr. Seuss,

join the group he created and what eventually lead to his demise.

lol, I don't think I'll be granting any new member additions for a while unless someone contacts me directly. Go enjoy your trainwreck somewhere else, the group is there to serve a purpose.

Really another one of these threads?? I swore public apology was enough. And really? We need another adult telling adults how to behave on the internet? Im sure ppl know what to do & just choose to do otherwise. I dont think a thread will change anyone.

Staahp you guize.

I remember having "SDN beef" with "Dr Seuss" a few times.... if internet beef is even such a thing in a troll driven anonymous world of neurotic pre-meds

The only annoying thing about these threads is the same people stumbling in here to complain about them.

Holy ****, just don't click the link.

I'm actually really interested to know what exactly happened since I remember him a lot from the past few months. I haven't been active lately due to school but someone PM me the details. I don't have facebook, I'm busy with medical school, I don't know how to search, etc etc. Someone fill me in.

This is why these threads have continued; it hasn't been about learning from a situation, it's been about wanting to gossip or feeling better about yourself because of someone else's mistake. People can't seem to mind their own business. Come on, guys. There will be a new obsession in a few days, I'm sure.

Agreed. If people were walking a mile in his shoes they'd want the situation to be hush hush. There's no reason to turn SDN into TMZ.

Bacchus goes to PCOM :meanie:

Don't hit me please.

? Not sure about this...he was the only reason why this was public in the first place. He posted about this non stop, so no one needs to project their feelings into this

I think this is a cautionary tale for everyone to hear, share and understand. Not everyone is on SDN everyday so having this be a topic for a week or two will be good.

It will die out all by itself just like every other thread eventually has.

In this vein i think its good for everyone to know the basics of what happened and realize that this is a professional forum and not a social forum. Yes, there are some who are gossiping on this thread, but you cant control the internet...but you CAN influence it.

So, for those of you who are complaining about this thread (or any others) remember what Gandhi learned from H.D. Thoreau: be the change you want to see in the world. In this case, if you want this to die, don't post. If you want this to change, post something different.

I want this to be about the actual situation, without being specific to the person involved since thats irrelevant to learning from the experience, so Ill post about what happened:

This is the basics of what has happened, for those of you who haven't heard yet. A certain SDN regular recently had his acceptance rescinded from a medical school after having posted several comments, and started a number of threads, that contained racially insensitive comments, threats to other users and other immature and unprofessional language and attitude. There was one last instance that was the breaking point for this person, in which they had a fight in a Facebook group with another user and ended up making a racially insensitive joke and some threats. Whats silly is that this user used their real name on both SDN and Facebook, and associated themselves with their med school often. After so many offenses, presumably, the school decided the student was no longer deserving of a spot in their class this year and set them an email. This is not the first, nor last, time that a med school has rescinded an acceptance for unprofessional behavior.

At first, some thought it was a prank, but it ended up being true. Those of us who have been on SDN for a while are split because this user was known to be kind and encouraging to underdogs, but then again had several distasteful exchanges on SDN which brought up this whole dichotomy.

In the end, it doesn't matter to judge the person, but it does make sense to understand the situation. Obviously, you can't have immunity of consequences online, especially if you use your own name.

HalfListic, thank you for that. That's the most respectful post I've read about this whole debacle.

i can't say i completely agree. every college has a "watch what you say on social media" spiel and every med school the same (probably). every job i have ever had reminds you to be smart with social media. it is constantly all over the place yet people still say things they end up regretting. clearly the stories aren't doing anything to curb people's actions so maybe seeing direct action is a way for people to actually get it. it really sucks that it happened to him and i feel bad for the guy, but what is done is done so let's use this as a teaching experience so it doesn't happen again. and the worst part about it is that it likely will happen again.

This. He brought it to SDN voluntarily.

Wow. I don't "feel better about myself" because of his situation but rather concerned about what he actually did to warrant the consequences. I asked for a PM instead of continuing to post it on the threads.

Sorry for taking an interest in someone who I used to communicate with and read posts from on a regular basis for the past several months.

Er. people make mistakes. Forgivveeeee theeeemmmmmmm!!

Oh I don't have a problem with him or him posting that thread. I was just writing in response to the person that said something like "if we were in his shoes we wouldn't want this to be publicized".

I wasn't targeting that to you specifically, I was generalizing about the tone of past threads on the same topic.

Yes yes we are all rottweilers in this dog eat dog world. Really though, what happened?

Yes yes we are all rottweilers in this dog eat dog world. Really though, what happened?

Person 1 made rude/hostile/inappropriate comments on the internet.
Person 2 (perhaps plural) got offended and reported Person 1 to ACOM.
ACOM investigated Person 1.
ACOM rescinded Person 1's acceptance via email the day before Thanksgiving.
Person 1 made a thread on SDN to apologize.
SDN came to the conclusion the letter from ACOM was fake.
SDN was later informed the letter is real.

Ahh I understand now. I remember him calling some poor fella out for PMing him questions. I suppose this is a classic case of karma for the history books.

I know people think that a thread like this won't change anyones actions, but I truly think this is a great situation to learn from. I feel bad for what happened to him, but it has definitely opened my eyes to some of the consequences that can come from thoughtless actions. It seems pretty easy to act like someone you wouldn't be normally when there is a feeling of anonymity (the mob violence mentality). I like to think that I'm a genuinely nice person, but the temptation has been there to say some nasty things over the internet. Luckily, I'm mostly a lurker on SDN and as a result of this incident I will be very careful about what I post in the future.

Everyone should be careful IMHO.
