I need some help finishing up my decisions on where to apply this year. My positives are Penn (IS), Ohio, North Carolina, and Colorado.

My ultimate goal is an equine surgeon, so while I know I'll get a good education anywhere, I'd like a school known for equine or with great equine facilities. I'd also like a school with a high rate of OOS acceptance - anything that will heighten my chances is good!

I did have VA-MD on my list but I was informed their equine clinic is 3 hours from the vet school. 👎 I'm also considering Minnesota.

Anyone have any suggestions for one or two more schools? It's so hard when you can't visit them first. Much appreciated!

MSU (michigan state) takes a fairly high percentage of OOS, although they also get A LOT of OOS applicants so i don't know what their percentage of ALL OOS applicants is (though that would be easy to figure out).
but for example for class of 2012, they had 67 IS and 59 OOS for the selected class.
they also have a pretty good equine program and i think pretty good facilities, but maybe someone else who actually attends can comment on that, as my comments are purely that of a bystander.

Have you thought about UF? They had the first neonatal equine intensive care unit of its kind. They also have great facilities for equine surgery, an equine treadmill and a nice HTU (horse teaching unit). I did my undergraduate at UF and I know the teachers in animal science and vet. med. are great. This past year they took 80 IS and 8 OOS. I didn't get in though, and I know they look at more than grades and the average amount of experience. If you were involved in a lot of stuff in undergrad, it might be the perfect fit for you. Glad to see you're applying to Ohio State though 😀

What is Cornell known for? Do you like it there? etc?

Cornell is known for equine and feline. I'm sure there are more, too? I'm attending this fall and am going there for equine.

I did think of Cornell, but from what I've read it seems like their admittance stats are higher than most?? My GPA/GRE/experience hours are average at best. Maybe that's just my misconception, though... any thoughts?

cscip, Ohio is my first choice!! 🙂 I haven't thought of UF, it looks like the chances aren't great for OOS, but I'll look more into it. Thanks for the suggestion!

They might have higher standards I suppose, but they also accept a considerable amount of OOS applicants. Definately about 3x more than UF and Virginia Maryland, anyway.
As for the stats, check out the Successful Applicants thread to see what the stats of those of us that were accepted to Cornell are. That should give you an accurate idea of their average student. Actually, I applied to Tufts, UPenn (MY instate, aslo) and COrnell, and Cornell was the only one that accepted me. So take from that what you will... it never hurts to try, right? ALthough their supp. app. is a real pain in the gluteus maximus. BTW I'm going for equine, too.

I'm afraid I'll just apply to the wrong ones and not get accepted whereas I might get accepted if I pick that right one... and yet I do have limited application funds... I think I need to stop obsessing. Easier said than done!

just note that cornell has a very extensive supplemental application; imo, it's only worth doing if you've got cornell very high on your list after looking into it.

personally, i've never heard iowa associated with anything equine.

i'd definitely keep penn, ohio, and colorado at the top of your list, and after that, look into other details of the school. in other words, even if its not famous for equine, it might appeal to you enough in order to apply. i never looked into UF, but that sounds like a good idea. also keep in mind a "back up" school... definitely apply to your instate unless you're willing to go through all of this again next year in order to get into one of thsoe three.
