So of the 4 interviews, I feel as if I did really well on one, so-so on one, bad on one, and I have yet to do the last one. Now I'm starting to feel a bit nervous because I haven't heard anything back from the last few schools.

I applied to 10 schools total, received interviews at 4, and have yet to hear back from the other 6 (ie, no rejections yet). Of the 6 schools, 1 is in-state and the others are all OOS. I'm thinking about applying sometime this week to 2-3 more schools OOS just to up my chances of getting in this cycle. What do you guys think? Don't fret, or apply ASAP?

It seems like you're in a pretty good situation with four interviews. Maybe you can look to see how many they accept vs reject post interview.

I'm in the same boat.
3 pre-dec 1st interviews and 1 post
I've already done NYU (I think it went pretty damn good considering I had the psychologist guy)
I have USC on nov 3rd and MWU-AZ in late november.
Case in march.

and it doesn't look like I'll be getting any more pre-dec interviews.

Statistically speaking, I think for every 4 interviews you have, you have a high probability of scoring at least one acceptance.. of course that is if you do well in the interview but that is hard to assess. Several of the dental students I have talked to have said they felt they bombed their interviews, but they still got in! Keep the faith.

Personally, I wouldn't apply to more schools now, since it's already October and the schools probably wouldn't even look at your application until post-Dec anyway. But if you do I would choose schools that interview late like Temple, BU, etc.

I think having 4 interviews means you definitely are dentist material, why else would 4 dental schools invite you? 😛, HOWEVER! probabilities are not additive in this case, so it would depend on a mix of your interview skills and luck.
Good luck

I don't think you should worry quite yet. There are plenty of people out there (including myself) that have applied to more schools than you and have heard from less than you have and some that haven't heard from any yet. Keep that chin up..4 is a good amount of interviews so far....and.....no rejections yet...Good Luck man!

So, if they don't look at my application until post-Dec anyway, does that mean I can wait until Dec 1st to see if I get an acceptance, and if I don't then I can apply to a few more and it won't make a difference from applying right now?

Thanks for the advice, everyone!

Also, I've been thinking about this. It seems as if all of the schools that I have interviewed at typically interviews about 400 students per cycle. Isn't it somewhat of a safe bet that of those 400, about 300 are the same students interviewing at every school (ie, higher GPA, DAT, etc) with about 100 being different due to the schools selection factors? That's just a random thought that popped up a few days ago...

No one knows... but the earlier the better.

Make your own decisions so that you do not have to look back and say why didnt i do that...

One interview is enough. 😉 Take it from someone who applied to 2 schools, only had one post-Dec 1 interview, and got accepted.
Good luck.

Do you have any idea how wrong this "advice" is? Most people who are SERIOUS about a career in dentistry should apply to more than just a few schools. Who in their right mind would want to take the risk of NOT getting accepted and having to wait an entire year to apply again.

At my temple interview, they had us go around and introduce our selves, one of the things we had to talk about, was how many schools we applied to. If the number of schools was low, Brian (the admission guy) jumped on the applicant and started asking him questions as to "why are you only applying to 5 schools? Do you know how competitive this field is?" He didn't specifically say it, but he was very much hinting that applying to a low number of schools isn't the most ideal way to get accepted.

This comment is very disrespectful.

I agree that you should apply to more than a few schools if you are really serious about dentistry. I would not want to risk taking another year off just to reapply. Anyway, I could only apply to 4 schools because of financial situations. I wish I could have applied to more, but oh well...

With your stats, 4 is more than enough 🙂

But you are an exception to the rule.... MOST pre-dents aren't packing 25+AA and 3.8+ GPAs

I'm really sorry if I came off as arrogant... I'll keep this type of opinion to myself from now on.

Just to clarify--
My first comment about 1 interview being enough was in response to the OP's question "are 4 interviews enough." Obviously the correct answer is that 1 interview is enough, there are many people in dental schools all over the nation who only interviewed at that one school and were successful.
My comment was not to imply that you should only apply to one school, nor should you turn down interviews at multiple schools if you are lucky enough to receive them.
Obviously if you are "serious" about dentistry you will do everything possible to make yourself an attractive candidate and apply to as many schools as you are interested in, and attend as many interviews as you are financially able to.
That being said, just to clarify, I do happen to be a dentist, and a recent graduate in fact. And I am not an "old as2 man" thank you very much (talk about disrespectful!). And to clarify, I was on the adcom at my dental school for 2 years. So I happen to be aware of some of the inner workings of admissions committees.
And you are correct in saying that sometimes adcoms will ask you why you are only applying to/interviewing at a small number of schools. I have also witnessed adcoms asking the exact opposite question to students who applied to a high number of schools...as if they were worried about their chances.
The bottom line is, if you are a relatively competitive candidate, and you don't completely bomb the interview, your chances of getting an acceptance at that school are the same as everyone else at that interview, even if you only have 1 interview and they have 15.
So my "advice" would be to do the best you can with your applications, etc., and if you only get one interview, fine! Rock it out! You just might get your acceptance on Dec. 1 and the guys with 15 interviews will get waitlisted.....I have seen it happen. 😉

how come everyone on this forum who claim to be 'dentists' claim to be on 'adcom'...

to IamOCD please provide the link data stating that most students only get in w/ one interview...

thank you... if you would like i can provide you the link stating an average student applies to at least 10 schools.

Although I disagree with applying to only 2 schools, I didn't take offense at his comment. Looking at the numbers and statistics, if you get an interview, usually you have about a 25%-33% chance of being accepted or waitlisted (unless you totally bombed the interview). So the odds do get a whole lot better. I would still apply to at least 5-10 schools again if I would have to reapply or do it all over again. Hope I get in this cycle though :xf:

Thanks for all of the advice, folks!

[FONT=Arial,Helvetica]glancing at predents, about 40% of the interviewed get invites. so by classical statistics you have about a 98% of getting in this year. (1-.4^4)..

[FONT=Arial,Helvetica]http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20080130234527AApqkw9.

[FONT=Arial,Helvetica]but then i suck at statistics so caveat emptor. .

That's a good way to look at it, about 40% interviewed get in.
Chance of not getting in 60%. chance of not getting in to any of the 4 = 0.6^4
So chance of getting in to at least 1 is
1-0.6^4=1-0.13=87%!!!!

i like to think of it that way, but again this is assuming there's no relation between the interviews which is... not true (cuz if you are a poor interviewer or a good interviewer, the stats can be skewed).
