i had a question about residencies...

i know some are different lengths in number of years, but what about the number of hours per week?

i know residencies are notorious for being minimum 60-70 hours a week on up to 100 hours, but is this true for all medical residencies? or do professions that typically work "reasonable" hours such as anest, derm, and psych work fewer hours in residency than say surgeons?

What you'll realize in, oh, say, 2010 as a third year student, is that the amount of work you do doesn't really matter if you are doing what you enjoy. That said, there will always be residency positions that work more hours than others. What is true now for those fields and those locations will not be true when you are applying for a residency, so don't worry about it right now. Anything you here on SDN now will be dated by the time it should actually concern you.

They definitely vary by location and by specialty. Check out scutwork.com to get an idea. An opthalmology residency at Hopkins may have killer hours but the same residency at a quieter location might be much more bearable. Path, Psych, and PM&R have the reputation of shorter residency work hours too.
