Family member recently admitted to a SNF/rehab place for a few weeks. Was told he'd get daily PT/OT so he could go home. It's been 5 days and he's only gotten a PT eval. Also he's developed oral thrush and unable to eat due to pain, and the PA/NP at the facility hasn't prescribed anything for it going on 3 days. I know it was a holiday weekend, but still.

I'm sure some of you either work at a SNF or have moonlighted at them. They can't all be this bad. I know when I was on the wards we'd send patients out to SNFs all the time. I feel bad if this is what we're sending them to. I'm in the military living out of state, so I can't make it home for a while to see what's up myself. But hopefully they'll be out by the time I make it anyways.

Is it just a function of our system? Anything we, as family, can do to motivate better care? Thanks.

I always tell my patients, that to get the best care in a SNF, family presence should be there every single day (but not always at the same time everyday, and the visit doesnt have to be long either). If they know family will be coming in - guess who will get a bath/personal care etc on time. Unfortunatley the squeaky wheel does get the grease...

While the above is true for long term snf, im sure it can apply to rehab/short term as well.

Where I lived there was an absolutely stunning facility, but it was very expensive with a 2 yr or more waitlist.

Yup that summarizes it.

There is little impetus to improve care at these places because often the long term residents are basically just abandoned by family. Nurses who work in these places are burnt out and are looking for easy work. There’s no doctor there all the time so things get missed and when it’s too late the person is in the hospital.

I have yet to see a SNF that doesn’t horribly neglect its patients. My grandmother was at a rehab for two weeks recovering from surgery and she basically didn’t get anything done until my family would get upset at the staff. It’s bad.
