Are any DO's going to take both CS exams?

I was wondering about this. Some of the allo places that I are applying to next year require the usmle CS. Does anyone know if our comlex pe can substitute for the other. If this has been asked before, sorry to repeat. It would really be a royal pain to have to go and take both of these.

While taking the USMLE CK exam might be a good idea if you are applying to allopathic programs, it is not necessary to take both the CS exams. Just take the DO CS exam, most programs don't care about the CS exam at all to be honest with you.

Good Luck!

Some allopathic programs specifically require USMLE. If your school does not require COMLEX PE for graduation, you can skip the COMLEX step 2 and 3 exams and take USMLE instead. (You must complete all 3 USMLE steps to get licensed.) However, if your school does require COMLEX 2, then you must contact the allopathic programs you're interested in to see if they require USMLE, or bite the bullet and take both sets of exams.

I'm taking them both because I love the financial and mental abuse...actually I would just rather take both of them now (ok really next winter) rather than find out I have to come back and take them later. Besides - I have enough stuff to worry about without trying to figure out which tests I have to take! I think that some states require DO's to be licensed through the osteopathic system - don't they? Some allo residencies require USMLE..it is just too confusing and time consuming to figure out so I will take whatever test they throw at me as long as it is in English.

True dat!

Sorry, but you are wrong. Many states simply require you pass all 3 steps of either the USMLE or COMLEX. In fact, here in Texas, many DO's never take step III if they have taken step one and two of USMLE, because they then don't have to study OMT. Most simply take COMLEX since they have to take Level II in order to graduate, but not all DO schools require Level II Comlex to graduate.

The above poster PAC is correct, nursey is wrong. I have communicated directly with a rep from the state medical board of the state that I am doing my residency in (and plan to practice in). They accept either COMLEX I-III or USMLE I-III. I have taken steps I/II of both exams and plan on taking USMLE III only. I would like to see a list of states that require all three COMLEX parts to obtain a license, though.

The list of state medical boards can be found at http://www.fsmb.org/members.htm. It looks like the majority of states have a single licensing board. I would think a DO taking I-III of the USMLE would be accepted in all these states.

Starting with the Class of 2008, taking and passing Comlex Step II will be required before the student can graduate from an osteopathic school. This policy is an AOA requirement and schools must implement this in order to remain accredited by the AOA.
