Is a charcoal grey suit with a black dress shirt considered a no-go? I hate the way a white dress shirt looks with my suit

(I'm gay I should know this, but I don't )

Gray was the new black 5 years ago. Now it's blue. Pretty soon it will swing back around to black. Any of the three colors are fine. Just avoid bright blue.

A very well tailored charcoal suit with a solid navy blue or dark red tie tied four-in-the-hand, white shirt, and black shoes was my go-to. For very cold weather I have a black RL overcoat that I could swear was made specifically for me. I sometimes wore the vest that came with it. I got complimented frequently by people at my interviews when I wore the vest with the suit; apparently it is uncommon in the good way.

I think more important than the color is the fit of the suit and having just the right amount of personal touch.

[serious time]

I have one suit. It's black.

I got it from Goodwill and even then I had to repair one of the pockets. I've had it for 10 years.

This winter I almost sold it so I could pay my heating bill. But I figured keeping one thing in my wardrobe which I can feasibly wear to weddings, funerals, and job interviews is worth being cold.

The idea that someone might select against me because it doesn't match my eyes or because my shoes and jacket are a slightly different shade of black is beyond my comprehension.

I will look nice for your interview. I might not be the pinnacle of 2016 fashion, but I will look nice.

Now back to your regularly scheduled thread.

I know I sound like a pretentious hipster whose above mainstream fashion conventions, and I really don't mean to, but this is all I can think of when I hear "dont wear black, wear charcoal"

A subtle difference but very very noticeable when worn.

I wore a black suit because it fit so much better than my charcoal. It's all about how you feel wearing it. I wouldn't have been as comfortable in the charcoal.

For the "other" category, I saw a gentleman in the navy wearing his dress blues to the interview. Looked really sharp imo..
