I was wondering if DOs are not able to specialize in certain fields and aren't able to practice certain fields since they do not attend med school.

It would be extremely difficult for a D.O. to obtain a Geriatric Aerospace Gynecology residency. Pediatric Bariatric Nephrology is pretty much closed to D.O.'s as well.

As silly as the OP's question sounded I actually had a good friend of mine ask me something similiar.

He is an MSII at a MD school. We were chatting one day and he said, "So are you getting excited about starting medical school. Ooops, you don't mind me calling it that do you?" Well DUH!!!!!!!!!!! What else would you call it? He even applied to a number of DO schools and was accepted at PCOM, so he knows DO school is medical school. Oh no, I guess his MD school corrupted his brain

While DO's can match into anything there are still many competitive MD specialties that have biases against them.

On the Internet troll is a slang term used to describe:

remember you can take USMLE I. If you score higher than your MD counterparts what are they going to say. They are going to look like idiots. And to give you heads up the cheif resident in Neurology at MCV is a DO. And there is one at George Washington as well.

hmmm, a friend was telling me DO's are rare in DC area??? anyone know if this is true, is it primarily b/c its not a rural area at all? I know DO's don't all practice in rural areas, but many do...so i'm asking.

Also, anyone heard of any DO's in Neonatology???

In the greater D.C. area surrounding Manassas there were ~15 DOs listed in the that area's phone book. I never checked all the other phone books for the area (there are so many phone books). There are more DOs in Alexandria and Arlington then they are in Manassas. The DO that interviewed me for my LOR is the distric head of VOMA (Virginia Osteopathic Medicine Association. Plus VCOM has someone on their board of directors in the area as well.

They aren't plentiful but don't DOs make up only ~10% of all doctors.
