How does the scheduling in a community ER compare to a teaching hospital? Don't docs in academic ERs do research and other things which require them to maintain some 9-5 office hrs as well?

Just today, one of our attendings was telling me that they are scheduled for 128 hours/month, which is 32 hours per week, but are expected (but not paid) to be around for the other 8 that would make up the week.

If there were truly only 4 weeks per month that would be true, but the average month comes to about 4.35 weeks, making 128 hours closer to 29 hours per week.

In any case, most full-time academic positions involve other regular educational or administrative duties as well which are generally included somehow in their pay scheme.

His point was that the community EM docs 10 miles down the road make approx $100K more/year, and that the pay scheme at our hospital was not the best (to be kind).
