Are embroidered scrubs to start medical/dental school a good idea?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Anything you wear to anatomy will be ruined, you (hopefully) will wear a protector over them, and you will never wear them again anyway once you have access to the scrub machines.

I keep my anatomy scrubs balled up in a plastic bag in my trunk. They're gross, and smell horrid, and I did wash them. I hang onto them only out of sentiment.

You'll get a nice white coat with your name on it, and a whole ceremony where your parents get to gush 🙂

Never pay money for scrubs. They are work clothes for work. Your employer or school should provide them. That’s the whole point of scrubs.

Maybe not as a med student, will get you singled out quickly as "that" person. But personally as an attending I have a cool scrub top with the Galactic Empire from Star Wars emblem sewed in. All the Star Wars nerds thinks its the coolest.

Wearing scrubs with your name embroidered isn't that uncommon among ED residents/attendings at my institution. Other than that, I have never seen other services wear embroidered scrubs (including surgical teams).

At my hospital, the services that go into the OR or their equivalents can't wear their own personal scrubs. When I'm on IR, I gotta get them out of the hospital's scrub machine.

"my friend"

OP is just the right level of neurotic to do something like this based off his reddit posts.

Only if they read:

Yes literally my friend. I think this is the stupidest idea in the world lol and embroidered scrubs as a student is tacky. Apparently its more normal in the dental world.

Try again

Will medical students need scrubs for anything other than anatomy lab? Trying to determine how many I need to get (incoming MS1)

I would wear the pants around because they’re “professional attire” and they’re comfortable. But also, clinical med labs and stuff. So essentially I had 1 anatomy set, two other sets. But I also had 2 sets already because of previous jobs. I probably could’ve gotten by with 2 (1 anatomy 1 other)

We surgery resident have to wear the ones from the hospital kiosk. I literally show up to work in Lululemon and then change into scrubs. Clinic days are suits.

Don't invest in embroidered scrubs. Invest in a nice suit.

Depending on your school, you may want to get a couple (cheap) pairs for things like shadowing, student health fairs/clinics, etc - but I would check with your school about this, because sometimes there are specific requirements for specific hospitals (color, brand, etc). You'll probably want these to be separate from your anatomy scrubs, cause those will be real gross

Do schools typically have an issue with scrubs embroidered with health network logos for lab? For instance I worked at a hospital and had to get scrubs with their logo, and I was hoping to just use those scrubs for lab

Nope they shouldn’t. Ask them though

It’s kinda weird as a student. I have embroidered Figs now (#basic I know but so comfy) but I only decided to get them after starting residency and seeing that most of the residents and attendings at my program wear them.
