Earliest interview date offered to me was September 15ish or 20ish. I was busy with research/rotations/Step2/random-crap-from-school and didn't start interviewing until mid-November. I was kinda worried at first, but turned out fine. FYI, interview offers started rolling in September 2 or 3 (ERAS opened September 1, 2010).
Latest interview date offered to me was February 4ish or 7ish. But I didn't go that late... wrapped up the last interview in January.
If you can, schedule an elective, like ER or something where it'll just be a few shifts, during the Dec/Jan winter holidays. Very few interviews (like 2-3 programs) are offered between December 20ish-January 2ish. So if you're doing shift work, there's flexibility for you to make those interviews offered during the winter holidays or have time left over to relax.
General Tips for planning interview traveling:
- remember you'll be working with the weather and airlines, so try to plan your Midwest/East Coast +/- South (South having more crazy winter winter of late than typical for it) interviews during Sep/Oct, but be nimble with last minute changes.
(with lots of luck and a few last minute change of flights on Southwest for free, I narrowing missed 2 Midwest snow delays, 2 East Coast snow delays, 2 Southern frozen rain delays... though sometimes I had to go to interviews on less than 4-5 hours of sleep, but that was fine because you're just expected to socialize)
- get all your stuff in ASAP. Earlier interview offers will have more dates to choose from. If they don't list all the dates, reply to ask for more dates. I saved a lot of money by flying from 1 interview to the next and not doubling back from home again.
- Google Cal / Maps + FlightView android app kept my traveling straight. Worked pretty well. FlightView must get auto-updates on gate changes & delay updates from central command, becuase I often heard about stuff earlier than the public announcement.
- sign up for as many frequent flyer programs as you can handle. I got a lot of signing bonus miles that I will surely use during my vacation times intern year!

cool, just trying to schedule my electives
thanks!
