just wondering this: when we email admissions some questions about requirements or logistics/etc, are the people who respond to us part of the selecting committee?

like, would they remember you if you asked a dumb/obvious question? or should we be worried if the reply is kind of harsh?

thanks!

No, they're staff....secretaries or admin assistants.

They're not omniscient, either.

This varies from school to school.

Some schools, I've noticed, the dean of admissions is the one sending out the secondaries or responding to queries about admissions.

No not necessarily that the dean is screening all the apps. Just that I've noticed in the correspondence I've received from the school that the dean is the one signing off on the email.

Secondaries often come out under authority of the admissions dean.
So do other decisions. It doesn't mean that the dean is specifically making the decision. It is the dean's job to execute decisions of the committte, not to make them.

True. But I have had instances where I contacted the generic admissions email from the website and had the associate dean of admissions reply, which is what I think OP is more concerned about

That must have been frightening...

thanks guys!
basically i asked some questions about courses, and the reply didn't have any greetings and I don't want to be too specific but it just sounded really aggressive and suggested that I didn't really know about what was going on kind of thing...
good to know that the person probably isn't involved haha

Are you a current applicant? If not, I wouldn't worry too much. If you are a current applicant, any correspondence you send to the school could potentially be referenced in your admissions file even if it is correspondence with a secretary.

But if your email was professional, respectful , was requesting info that was relevant and not easily found on the website it shouldn’t matter how the person answering sounded. That person might be known in the office as harsh. Nothing you can do,about it now so don’t worry.
