I am just curious as to where more URM's stand. For instance, interviews, acceptances, rejections, etc. As for me, I am still waiting to hear, but I have only recently finished all of my secondary applications (I know...the horror!) 😉 . But I think that knowing where others are in the application process is important. Oh, and Happy Holidays!

Just hang in there...I hope things go well for you during this process. Good luck to you. 😀

I got most of my secondaries in about a month and a half ago. I've been on three interviews and I've been accepted to one school so far. Stay strong and keep your head up. And All-Star14, LAKERS 4 LIFE!!!!!

As I wrote in another post, I got my first acceptance tonight from NJMS! So far I stand at 3 rejections, 1 withdrawal, 7 interviews, 1 acceptance, 11 schools that haven't told me anything, and a partridge in a pear tree. Merry Christmas.

Hey congratulations wolferman!! Thanks for sending that extra HU secondary too, really do appreciate it !! 🙂

cocoabutter, my applications didnt get complete till recently, about 2 weeks ago (those LORs took 4ver!!!! 😡 )
I did 11 secondaries, currently waiting

Thanks for the support guys. 😍 Good luck to everyone...there is still plenty of time!

Hey Cocoa,

My application got complete during the last week of Oct. bcz it took forever for my school to send out my LOR's. I'd already had my AMCAS processed since June! Anyway I've had two interviews (in Dec.) so far and have another three scheduled for Jan. I recieved secondaries from all the schools that I applied to (12 in total) but still havn't heard from the 7 other schools on my list. Kinda feel like I've probably been rejected because alot of them are top tier. I did really hope that I'd here from a school in NYC bcz that's where I've been living the past year and I have a lot of friends here so....I just really wanted to stick around here.🙁

lakun, I am positive that things will go well for you.

I know that it is frustrating because you have had everything complete for such a long time. Just be patient. I am not going to give up hope. Good luck on those interviews!

Everyone, what schools did you apply to?
Me:

University of Florida
University of South Florida
University of Miami
Wake Forest
Meharry
Howard

So far, nothing yet, but I know from talking to current students at Meharry and Howard that they are notoriously slow. I am a Florida resident, so I am not giving up there. Wake Forest is my dream. I am thinking of calling/writing to express my interest. I have heard that this can be successful. We'll see after the new year.

Well, in retrospect i feel like I should have evaluated my choices a little more and probably not applied to some of the top tier schools that I did bcz it was probably a waste of money:

Boston University
Umass
Drexel
Meharry
Howard
Tufts
Harvard
NYU
Case Western Reserve
Cornell
Columbia

oh, and I have interviews at:

Meharry
Tufts
BU
Case
UMass

hey cocoa,
i applied to 17 schools (started out w/21 but didn't complete the secondaries for 4 of the top ones), took august MCAT so got a few secondaries in in Oct and the rest in the first wk. of November.
I got a few interview requests immediately after my app for the school was complete (UMDNJ-RWJ, ECU, UF) and now (December) have just been starting to get them from others (UNC-CH, Jefferson, Meharry.) Have heard nothing from 11 schools as of now(wanna know? Hopkins, Yale, Howard, Drexel, Wake Forest, Loma Linda, St.Louis, Loyola, GW, NYMC, is that all?), but even if i don't hear anything else i'll be pretty happy, assuming i get in somewhere!
as for stats i have good MCAT, low GPA, ivy league school.
hope that helps~

care bear, I know that you will get in somewhere. I have a few questions for you: How long has your secondary application been complete at Wake Forest? Also, how long was the turnaround for Meharry?

As for my stats, I have average everything.

Good luck!

Hi cocoabutter. I have applied to Boston U., UConn, Wake Forest, Georgetown, George Washington, Southern Illinois, KU, Saint Louis U., Finch-Chicago Medical, Michigan State, Ohio State, and UPenn. Interviewed/Accepted SIU, letter from SLU on M. 12/23 for interview. My applications were complete at al schools by the middle of October except at MSU b/c they wanted to waitlist a sista before sending the secondary. I haven't heard from the other schools. Good luck!

Good luck to all you guys.! Stay positive 🙂

hi cocoa,
thanx for encouragement! i had my app mailed to Meharry on Nov 5th so it should have been complete a few days after that. so turnaround was about 5 1/2 weeks for them. as for Wake, my app was mailed on the same day, Nov 5th, so as of now it's about 7 weeks and counting.

Good luck everyone. Happy holidays to all, and I wish you all many acceptances. 🙂

Oh, forgot to list my stuff:

Rejections= U of Chicago

Didn't send in secondaries to Drexel and Meharry

Interviews : Mayo, Mich St., Case, Cornell, UCSF, UCI, UCD, UCLA, Wash U, Howard, Pitt

25 schls, wow, talk about expensive, but still Congratulations:clap:  CHM-MSU is a great schl, well ok maybe I'm a lil biased, did undergrad and now grad schl there 😉, but I worked at CHM, and it is a great program, very helpful people. If u decide to go there, that would be a good choice.
When did u get your AMCAS out, Howard hasnt sent secondaries out for people who applied to AMCAS late, as in early Sep onwards. You must have great stats, to have all those interviews, thats really good 🙂

I applied to way too many schools to list on here (20). I'm from FL so I applied to all the schools here and some scattered in the northeast. So far I've had 1 interview, 2 more in January, and then one yet to be scheduled. The schools are Howard, Einstein, NJMS, and Rochester. I've also had 3 rejections pre-interview. So I still have to hear from 13 schools. Let's see how it goes.

I'm from North Carolina and I applied to 21 schools. I've interviewed at 2 schools, have 6 more lined up for January, and have been rejected by 1 school, pre-secondary (Northwestern Bast*rds!). Still haven't heard from 12 schools.

Interviews: Howard, UNC-CH, ECU, Wash U, Dartmouth, U Maryland, Wake Forest, SLU.

Had Amcas done by early September

So I'm sure that you'll do well CCButter

Yeah it was expensive and I saved up ahead of time..that's the only way I could have afforded it. My stats actually aren't all that bomb, but I did have EC's and good LOR's and I worked mostly through school. My AMCAS was done in late June, and most of my apps were complete in Sept, and some in October. I did like CHM and I'm just waiting to hear something from the rest of the schools...I've heard absolutely nothing for about a month and a half now....good luck to all, Happy Holidays

To Cocoa or anyone else:

I'm just wondering which med schools are "URM friendly?" By that I mean which ones ACTIVELY recruit minority students. I was browsing the web and came across a premed webpage at Xavier that gave statistics on the percentage of minority student accepted from those that applied. To those who applied, I'm just curious to know if that was even a factor. Thanks!

I can't remember all of them off the top of my head, but I know that there are some besides Meharry, Morehouse, and Howard that actively recruit to increase the number of URM's matriculating. These statistics can be found in the MSAR.

Columbia is trying to double its URM representation.

If Columbia interviews about 70-80 percent of its out of state applicants then--why havn't they gotten in contact with me by now?! I've been waiting since late Oct.🙁

Lakun, that was exactly the point of my question. These schools promote themselves as actively recruiting minorities, but do they really?

I probably won't be able to apply to more than 10 schools, thus I want to make sure I mazimize my chances. Good luck with your app!

😳

There is a book published by AAMC that is a *must* for all URM's, it is called Minority Student Opportunities in U.S. Medical Schools. It breaks down by each school, how many URM's (from each URM group) applied, how many were accepted, how many have graduated, and other goodies. If you are truly interested in knowing which schools *actually* matriculate a good percentage of URM's versus those that say they do, this book is a must. It is not that expensive and it is priceless. A few that come to mind for Mexican-American is U of Iowa, MCW, U of Michigan, Michigan State. Schools will vary as which minority group they tend to give more acceptances to, so be on the lookout for that as well, if my recollection is good I think that Duke particularly favors African-American applicants. Good luck!

Great advice! Definitely but the book (I was recently told by AMCAS that they won't have it available again until April 2003)🙁

I sure hope so! I'll be applying there (here, really) in '05! 😀 Good luck to you all! Hope things go well for you this year! Oh, and don't forget to let a sistah know how things turn out for ya.

The book is on the AAMC web page under publications. I have the the 2002 one and it is really helpful, I have previous editions and they do not change that much. Here is the link URM Book

I recently purchased Minority Student Opportunities in US Medical Schools from the AAMC. I received it about two weeks ago.
