Are we supposed to intern??
Started by predentalqt
What kind?? Is it a paid internship and is this something we have to do or is shadowing and volunteering enough? I wanted to do a summer enrichment program
I am doing an internship in a month!
I'm trying to find out what interning at a dental office even means. Someone mentioned it to me recently so I asked another question on here to know the difference between interning and volunteeringWhat do you mean by intern?

Dental schools just want to see that you've had dental experience. This can take the form of shadowing where you gain observational experience, or can be more proactive such as volunteering, work experience, or dental internships. At the end of the day, dental admissions want to see commitment and interest in the field, and any form of experience is considered.

There are structured programs out there that refer to themselves as "internships". See: http://www.projects-abroad.org/volunteer-projects/medicine-and-healthcare/dentistry/
Thank you this is helpful. I got scared because when I made my education plan I didn't plan for an internship so I was hoping I'm not missing anything!Dental schools just want to see that you've had dental experience. For you own sake, do more than shadowing. Anybody can stand in a corner and watch Dr. ____ prep a crown. Try to get involved in a summer program at a dental school, or better yet, become an assistant. Hands on experience will help your application more than any amount of shadowing.
I've been wanting to be a DA but in my state it's a big hiatus from school, not guaranteed that I'll be able to get a job, and what's worse is that it'll take away from time I have to be in labs because they aren't flexible with student schedules. I was wanting to see if my school's dental office will let me work front office. Will that count for anything? For you own sake, do more than shadowing.
