I saw this in the Allopathic thread, so I might as well start one in the Osteopathic thread. Who is applying to Allopathic as well as Osteopathic schools? If so, do you have a preference? If only Osteopathic, why?

Applying to both with no preference.

Yes.

It is the same training, so I really have no preference. However, I would like to stay in Texas, so that I can take advantage of the ridiculously cheap in-state tuition. If forced to leave the state, I would like to go somewhere that has rotations in an area with lots of poor people.

Only applying to Osteopathic.

I really want to work in impoverished areas, focus on general health and prevention as well as work with patients that won't be able to have access or afford expensive Rx drugs or treatments.

I spent a lot of time (6+) years in the MD environment and have no desire to go to an allopathic school

I'd apply to both, without buying into the whole "I want to be a primary care provider so I'll go DO," nor the "I want derm so I'll have to go MD," thing. There are plenty of DO's that don't care about practicing primary care medicine, and there's plenty of MD's that do. Either allopathic or osteopathic schools would provide the means for me to achieve my goals: it's up to me to utilize those oppurtunities to the fullest.

I'm applying to both, but the osteo schools seem to show more love so it's leaning that way.

I'm applying to both. Regardless of any preference I may have, so far the score is 5-DO to 1-MD in terms of interview invites. If this is any indication, I will probably end up at a DO school. No matter where I am though, I'll be happy. I just want to be a doctor. 🙂

I second this!

I am applying to both. More DO than MD. I LOVE the philosophy, but there are a lot more allopathic schools closer to my hometown, so I have to at least apply.

I'm going to be applying to both but what happens at the interview when this is expressed, will they care, because i sure don't. Also with LOR will the MD schools get the OD LOR? and lastly cum 3.65, bcpm 3.7, 29 mcat competitive for OD?

We wouldn't know ... this isn't a pre optometry thread. No offense, but if you don't know enough about the degree to put the letters correctly (ie: I have to be a doctor and incase MD doesn't work ... need something) don't apply. (And yes, those stats are competitive for DO schools ... DO schools ... yup, DO. 😀)

haha yea thanks for the tip, my fingers must be on backwards today

Both, prefer DO.

I have the strong impression that an osteopathic program will provide an experience better suited to me.

I've applied to MD programs because there are MD programs close to home. The DO programs are, with two exceptions, far far away. Proximity isn't a huge deal, but certainly makes a difference.

I'm applying to both with no real preference. My top 2 schools, as of now are Jeff and PCOM (based on what I know and have heard). I'll apply to more allopathic than osteopathic just because of the densities of both types of schools around my area.

Only osteo, specifically because I am very interested in the physical med. side of things...am thinking about being a pm&r speciality, so I'd like to get as much experience with OMM and other physical modalities as possible

Im applying to both. 7 allo and 5 DO so far. Im kind of a non-trad student since I'm coming from an engineering background, but I'm still a young guy. I am hoping that my engineering degree will help with my slightly low GPA. I have taken the MCAT once already, and get my second scores back next Wednesday. Hopefully they will be better than the first time.

I agree with the above though - I dont really care where I go because I'll be a doctor either way 🙂.

I don't think optometry school accepts the MCAT. I'm sure your GPA is competitive, though.

Just a tip: if you apply somewhere, make sure you know what degree they offer. You might make yourself look real dumb in an interview otherwise.

applying to both, my only pref would be my state MD schools because of cost and proximity.

Both, but lean heavily towards DO(only applying to 1, maybe 2 MD schools based on location). I think the DO schools would be better suited to my personal neuroses and ideas regarding medicine.

I will apply to both, but prefer DO (at this point 😀 )

Edited to add: But, if accepted to an in-state MD program, I might accept it over DO to save $$.
