Arizona or OHSU!?!?!

Does anyone have an opinion on either one of these two schools? I got accepted into both, and I am having a VERY hard time deciding!! Any comments would be greatly appreciated!! 🙂

I can help you as much as you need. I'm a D2 at Arizona, of course.

How much is tuition at Oregon?

I like Arizona, but there are some things that need to be changed. Most of these things are to be expected with a new program.

Oregon is an excellent school, and I honestly believe that Arizona has the potential to be an excellent school. You would have it MUCH better than I did as a freshman dental student, and all the facilities would be still brand new for you.

PM me if you have any specific questions and I'll give you the downright dirty and honest answers. No holds barred. This is an important decision for you and you should have the straight facts.

I can't help much when it comes to Oregon, though.

I think you will get good dental education at both schools. OHSU has a better reputation than AZ because it has been around for a long time and 98% of its students graduated on time. AZ has not produce an graduate yet, however that does not mean AZ will not. I like AZ for its new approach in teaching and its new equipments and facility. I think in a few years AZ will gain its reputation and will be more or less equal to other good dental schools.

In term of finance, I am guessing that you are not an OR resident. The tuition at AZ is around $31,000 (I think) and for OHSU is $29,000 (for non-resident like you are). Your residency status will not be changed from non-resident to resident at OHSU and you will have to pay $29,000/year for all 4 years. The tuition at OHSU might increase due to budge cut next year (and this is very possible right now). So, my guess is neither attending OHSU nor attending AZ would help you saving money on tuition.

However, if you already live in AZ or have family in AZ, then you would save money on room, board, and other personal expenses. Same argument can be applied to OHSU.

In term of the weather, if you like "hot" place, AZ is the place to be. If you don't mind the mild cold and rain (9months/year), go to OHSU.

So, overall, my suggestion is you should look at what school will make you happy in the next four years and will provide you the better program with cheaper cost.

I applied to both OHSU and AZ too, and unfortunately AZ has rejected me recently. Although it is a bad news, but in a way it helps me to eliminate where I could go. I am an OR resident and i really like OHSU. And when I was at AZ, I liked that school a lot too (until now, of course). If I was in your case, having both AZ and OHSU accepted me, I would have the same dilemma. BUT given both accepted me, I probably will choose OHSU because my family is here and I can get an resident tuition.

Good luck with your decision. And if you choose to go to OHSU, hit me up so we can trade emails. I like to keep in touch with my future classmates before we will meet each other.

P.S I found from your profile that you are an AZ resident, so my guess AZ would most likely be better for you, especially later when you decide to open a practice in AZ. It is your hometown, you can make good network connection while you are still in dental school and when you graduate you will be in a very good shape. AZ is definitely a good place for dentists.

Dr. Smiley did a good summary. Although it isn't very cold here, but it is definetly more rainy. I really liked AZ also when I interviewed there. I haven't been accepted, but I haven't been rejected yet. Personally I was going to the first dental school that accepted me. Luckily I got 4 choices out of the 5 interviews I went to. So my advice is look at weather, curriculum, cost, schools facility and faculty, and of course wether it is important to you that a school have a past track history. Good luck where ever you decide to go!
