ARe there any special circumstances when working at West Point?

I talked to the West Point DENTAC commander last summer and asked him about working there (I'm a D4 student and West Point grad).

He told me that just about everyone at West Point has excellent oral hygiene. The main procedures done there are implants, restoring the implants, and third molar extractions. The catch: only specialists do those procedures, so that leaves little (if any) general dentistry to do there. He said it would be much better for a dentist straight out of dental school to first do the 12-month AEGD and then work at a bigger base (Bragg, Hood, etc.) with lots of soldiers needing plenty of dental work.

Personally, I would love to work at West Point, but after talking with him I felt that I would be spending all of my time doing hygiene checks and nothing else, while the rest of my peers would be expanding their skills doing more procedures while assigned at other bases.

I hope that answers your question.

Which bases are the nicer ones to live in?
They are all nice 🙂 Some places have fewer spots for general dentists than others and regardless of how nice they are - chance of going there is small (West Point, Presidio).

The types of procedures you do will vary to some degree by location you are assigned. Some places tend to be minor things like West Point - others are busy enough that a good variety of things come in the door.

Thank you both for the replies. I will try to get myself to a larger base. Thank you again.
