Hello,

I'm applying for the 2017/2018 program. I received my degree in Kinesiology (GPA 3.9) and will be taking two prerequisites this summer along with the GRE. My question is about the observation hours. I'm a Civilian with no military experience. The VA isn't accepting any new people to shadow PTs and there isn't a base in Dallas, TX. so I'm forced to go private sector. My question is, has anyone ever been accepted into the program that was a Civilian with no military experience??? I want to be in Army and to make it my career. Thank you.

I am applying for this cycle and, while I have not been accepted yet, I have applied more than once to this program and so I know a fair amount of the process. I was told that when selecting candidates they try to choose roughly half who are active duty/prior service and half civilians. Your grades are impressive but I would STRONGLY recommend you get observational hours at a military facility. They really look at where you did your hours, as it shows how serious you are about the program.

What's the nearest base? I'm driving 1 1/2 (sometimes 2 when the weather is bad) hours each way, once a week to get hours. It's not ideal but I'm hoping it's worth it a year from now when my packet goes to the board.

If you're in Dallas, the closest Army base is probably Ft. Hood. If you can, I would figure out a way to observe there. I applied for this cycle and there is a big difference between the Military physical therapy clinics and civilian physical therapy clinics. If you can, major military hospitals have inpatient PT you can observe with as well. And keep trying with the VA.

The VA near me isn't allowing volunteers at all in the PT clinic. They claim it's due to changes in their regulations. I had a VA work study lined up there for this term and they even cancelled that due to these same regulations. I would definitely check in to Ft Hood. Some posts are pretty finicky about allowing volunteers as well. It took me months to get my foot in the door at Ft Carson. For the longest time I was told only military dependents or current service members could volunteer at their hospital. Being prior service I was able to work some back channels with contacts on post. Ft Hood looks like it would be a long drive for you so maybe you can volunteer there every other week or so. You don't need a ton of hours at a military clinic but I definitely see why they want you to have them. Military clinics have a much different feel than civilian clinics.
