I am a soon to be fourth year Army HPSP student that is going to interview in July. I don't live near an Army base so I am going to an airforce base AAFES to get my class A's. Unfortunately I don't know what to put on the uniform. I called my adviser who told me to call my recruiter....three different recruiters later I still am not positive what goes on my uniform. I did OBC last summer.

Could someone please inform me exactly which patches, ribbons, insignia, attachments, etc., and how many of each I need to purchase. I have this much so far:

Name plate
MEDCOM patch
U.S. x 2

Please complete/correct if you can, I must have slept through this class.

I have this picture to go by
http://usmilitary.about.com/library/pdf/armyuniforms.pdf

Thanks,
Unidabiscuit

Sorry if I submitted this twice....my computer skills are lacking.

Well, you don't need Class A'a for most interviews. Class B's are probably fine, especially if you are doing a rotation there.

I would buy a the big red officer's book ....can't remember the name right now but i will post it when I get back in town on monday. It helps with uni questions. Also downloading the uniform requirements wouldn't hurt.

I imagine you're still a 2nd Lt. so you'll need the two brass bars to put on the shoulders of your tunic. Also, we are Medical Service (MS) Corps. so you'll need the pins that have MS over the medical symbol--they are pewter colored. Now, I am flying to OBC this weekend and my recruiter told me that as HPSPers we are not supposed to have a unit patch (MEDCOM) on our left arm because we are not physicians. Can anyone verify that claim?
Hope this helps

Absolutely 100% wrong. Wear the medcom patch.

When we graduate med school and start residency, do we switch to just the med corp pins?

yeah they are just the caduceus. And get some double bars.

Thanks for your imput.
I am a 2Lt.
So far I have:

2 butter bars
2 gold U.S. pins
2 silver MS pins
Name Plate

What about:
1)regimental insignia (to conserve fighting strength) pin
2)ribbons (not that I am really worthy...yet)??

I appreciate it!!

get that little book that tells you how 2 look spiffy in uniforms...err what is it called...maybe someone can help me out with the name....

it is a uniform guide... you ca get it on any base..probably off the net too

when i find mine then i will tell you the name...the other book that someone mentioned was the Army Officer's guide though I found that to be harder to follow then the uniform guide

about MEDCOM patches...i have also heard it both ways...some say wear it some dont....shrug... 😕

As far as I understand you can also wear the army service ribbon, the national defense ribbon, and the global war on terror ribbon. Check the web or a book for the proper order of those.

Correct (provided you have finished OBC (referring to the ASR)). The order is as follows (medial to lateral left side) - NatDef, GWOT, ASR. If you are entitled to other ribbons (prior service, etc) a cool website is http://armyawards.com/awards.shtml

"Build My Rack". I just like the sound of it.

You also wear the AMEDD Regimental crest on your shoulders (medial to your rank)

You wear the AMEDD patch on your shoulder.

The final resource: AR 670-1 http://www.army.mil/usapa/epubs/pdf/r670_1.pdf

hope that helps,

Geo

For those in HPSP you are not entitled to wear the ND ribbon until you have served on active duty in a non-ADT role. I quote from the reg: "All personnel serving on active duty during the above period are eligible for this award with the exception of reserve personnel on active duty for training" (emphasis added). Sorry

not as sorry as me. i sit corrected.

Unida,

Geo and Ed give good advice. AR670-1 is the regulation, and the ultimate authority. Everything else is a guide, but usually derived from the reg. I highly recommend the Army Officer's Guide for any entering officer, it's a great book. For your uniform, the small uniform guide is very good, and even has a plastic template in it to help you measure distances and placing for the US and branch insignia on your lapel.

Regarding the patch, technically, as an HPSP student, you are in the IRR. There is a rarely-seen "IRR" patch. But it sounds like Geo is adamant that you can wear the medcom patch, so put that on your left shoulder. The seamstress at the AF base you take the uniforms to should know where/how to place the patch, just verify with 670-1. If you wear that patch, wear the corresponding unit crests on your shoulders, centered between your rank and the button.

Regarding ribbons: when in doubt, leave it out. If you are not sure you are authorized a ribbon, do not wear it. If you've been to obc, wear the ASR, and nothing else. No one is expecting you to wear more. I know a LTC who prematurely ended his career by wearing ribbons he was not authorized (however his intent was to mislead).

Good luck, and PM me if you have more questions.

I got the impression that the regimental insignia (to conserve fighting strength) pin should go on your right chest?

Yes, as it does with the Class B and above your name tag. Please take a moment to look at AR 670-1. Login to AKO and find it if the link that I supplied doesn't work (it may be a limited distribution publication). The majority of the guide will not apply to you, so you can skip a lot, but there are drawings of what your basic uniform setup should be. Worth the ten minutes it would take.

On a related note, what uniform does one wear when reporting for the first day of an ADT (which I assume is just going to be a bunch of inprocessing paperwork)?

I emailed the student coordinator at BAMC (some DA civilian lady) and she said its my choice. I'm thinking of going with Class B, short sleeves w/o tie (it will be San Antonio in July after all). Then when I find out what the usual duty uniform is, I'll dress accordingly.

I am a student at USUHS and made a powerpoint presentation for a friend of mine of the class a and b uniform for an HPSP student with no prior military experience. I can't upload it on to the site(it is too big, but only 3 slides), but you can send me a private message with your email address and I can email it to you. I feel there are lots of students like my friend that have no idea how to put together a uniform for 4th year rotations and interviews.
