Hi,

I'm currently a sophomore in college and have grown interested in joining the army as a reserve. However, my dream career is to be a doctor, and I believe that the HPSP Program that the army offers is a great opportunity for me. If I were to join the army as a reserve now, would it be possible in the future to apply for the program during my senior year and have my reserve contract terminated? Or would I have to finish my contract before I can apply for HPSP?

Thanks in advance!

Damn tough question. I'm sure things have changed since I enlisted, but then again I'm not sure. You serve at the pleasure of some beurocrat, that means you exist because they say you do. Will they allow upward mobility, in the old days that depended on your job. If your job was manned, the answer was sure... if it wasn't, no way. That's sort of how the military works. My honest answer to your question is, finish college, then consider the military. You have a better shot that way. PS I don't intend to be cryptic, but enlisted to officer opportunities are rare, you'd really have to have the chops, meaning if you could do it, you could do it on your own in the fist place. Hope that makes sense.

Navy HPSP scholarship recipient here - my guess would be maybe? I was able to find something similar to what you described except from active duty. I would reach out to this user: Armyhealth He's on the forums advertising advice for Army HPSP scholarships.

DO NOT join the military until you have an acceptance in hand until you know all the details of a contract. Fellow classmates and friends that were prior service had a bear of a time getting ed delays etc. also, unless you have a *guarantee in writing* that a delay will be granted, it doesn’t exist.

Army health was my recruiter, really helpful/knowledgeable, I’d reach out to him on details about ed delay

Hey guys, I have a question regarding specializing in the Army. I was just accepted to medical school and thinking about doing the Army or Air Force HPSP. I am interested in oncology/hematology which would require an IM residency followed by training in onc/hem. Would it be difficult to specialize as an Army HPSP recipient and would I have to get special permission to do this?

Thanks!

Army and Air Force (and Navy for what it's worth) all have Hemonc.

You won't need any sort of special permission, just the scores and timing to get a training slot. You might not be able to get into a residency program straight from med school because needs of the service > desires of the doc

There is an entire forum devoted to this. Read it. Then ask your questions. Wanting a subspecialty that has zero relevance to the deployed environment is not a recipe for happiness in the current .mil.

I have read and searched for these questions in those forums but thank you! Also am interested in EM and psych, two relevant specialties for the military but I just wanted to know my options.

Army has 3 EM residencies, ~350 HPSP students & I'll give you a guess what the #1 most sought after residency is...
