So I figure I can get a better answer from you guys than any recruiter. They claim to pay upfront or "reimburse" you for all school related expenses. Does this include things like supplies, parking, transportation, health insurance, etc.?

In short.... what does the Army NOT cover that I should know about?

I'm pretty sure that if your school says health insurance is required (and they'll sign something to that effect) they'll reimburse you for it. They don't cover parking or transportation, to my knowledge. There's a list of supplies and the monetary amount allowed in the HPSP handbook. Books, as long as they're required, will also be reimbursed.

Since you're in the reserves don't you get insurance from the military?

They'll pay for health insurance. They won't pay for parking. I'm Navy, if you google the Navy HPSP handbook, it lists what they won't pay for (notes and etc). Odds are pretty good the Army feels the same way. Also means Army has a similar handbook. Welcoming to the HPSP group grope, they very poorly disseminate information to you.

hell no. your recruiter probably told you that you did. but you don't. even when you go on active duty it's not worth trying to use with all the trycare hassles.

i dont think they cover anything upfront, it all has to go through a rather painful reimbursement process. but as for what don't they cover -- hmmm... self-respect, mental anguish, lack of training, admin bullsht, and scores of other things that you can read about on this forum.

I think I need a renewal of my waiver for self-respect (Apparently you need one, Who knew?)

Not true. They will reimburse $250/yr for computer lease. There is a company out there that leases computers for $250/yr. I've had mine for going on 3 years now.

Computer lease... i guess that wouldn't be a bad deal if they provided a REALLY nice dell or something and provided all the warranty no questions asked... b/c i guess most computers get replaced every 4 or so years anyway... but if it was just a run of the mill HP or something that you could buy for a few hundred dollars at best buy, not as good of a deal... however, I suppose if the Pentagon is paying for it, might as well...

that's what i was afraid of

per the computer issue - don't quite a few schools have requirements or "suggestions" for computers that are really requirements b/c its the only ones they cover or make software for?

Our school had suggestions, but the only thing I really needed a computer for the first year was internet and email.

Well, if you want to pay for it yourself, go ahead.

Like you said, they get replaced every couple of years. I'll be ready for a new one when I graduate and will have paid nothing for the one I've used during school. And it's a good system unless you are into gaming which isn't exactly the intention.....
