I'm an M3 who is on the Army HPSP. Does anyone know about the quality of the Army Optho programs (Walter Reed, Brooke, Madigan)? Also, does it take anything different to match into a military program? Thanks.

Very good programs. I worked with a LT COL in the ARMY who was a retina fellow at Iowa. Man, he was paid about $150K/year through the ARMY to do his retina fellowship. He completed residency at Madigan and loved it. This LT COL was one strong surgeon. He completed about 1000 cataracts during his time in Alaska before fellowship. He was teaching his retina faculty Phaco techniques.

I am in the Navy so I'm familiar with the GMESB process. You need to contact your specialty leader in ophthalmology for the Army and start discussing your future. The specialty leader can guide you and tell you what you need to do. Also contact the program directors at all of the Army programs and express your interest.

Thanks for serving our country! 👍

Dr. Doan,
Thanks so much for the quick reply and great information! I'm glad to hear the Army has good programs -- I'd love to match in one. I'm not sure who the specialty leader is, but I will definately look into it. Also, do you think it is OK to contact the program directors by email, or should I try a more formal approach? Thanks again for all the help. Thanks for serving our country, as well! Unfortunately, there is not alot of love for military medicine on these chat boards.

Go ahead and send a formal email. I do it all the time. In fact, the premise of www.linkedin.com are professional e-mails. People conduct business all over the world with email.

I agree that there's not a lot of love for military medicine. It's a tough time during war. There are many benefits, however. Instead of working like a dog, for instance, I'll have time to pursue other interests. 😉

Good luck!
