So I am attending ODS this weekend. I will arrive on Saturday, a day early. How do I report on Base? Where do I go when I get there? And should I stay in a hotel and arrive Sunday or should I get on base on Saturday?

I am also starting ODS this weekend and am heading to Newport on Saturday. I was planning on calling tomorrow to make a reservation at the BOQ or Navy Lodge for Saturday night.

As far as where to go, when I took my boyfriend there for OCS there were signs throughout base directing you to where you need to check in. Hopefully they do the same for ODS...

When do you plan on arriving?

My flight gets in at 4:00. I was just reading on the website and it looks like its fine if we get there on Saturday. We just need to check in at Kings Hall and they will assign us our room.

It's been 3 years since I was there but I think I did arrive on Saturday. Met a bunch of other students from my deck and we all went out for one last 'meal of freedom' Saturday night. You can walk a couple miles and there was a little shopping center with some food. There's also a nice trail along the water that you can run on. Not sure if the Forestall is still there but you can run pretty close to it. Fun to see the immense size of a carrier. You could also catch a flick in the MWR center over by the NEX. Only other thing I'd mention is the 'quarterdeck procedure'. When you go into first floor King Hall, you're stepping onto the 'quarterdeck of the ship'. So stop at the second door, turn to the colors (flag) and come to attention (or your best impression of it), then turn to the Officer Of The Watch and come to attention again. Hold up ID and state "Ensign blah-blah, I have permission to come aboard." The OOW will then say "come aboard" and you can enter. Then the OOW will get you checked in and stamp your orders as well as tell you where your room is.

Good to know, thanks!

On the website it says some cab companies are able to drive on base - otherwise you might have to walk from the gate to King Hall. Does anyone know what cab companies can go on base?

When do you get in? I'm driving and should arrive at around 5/6ish. If you get in around then or later and need a ride from the gate, PM me and I'd be happy to get you.

If I remember correctly, Rainbow can get on and possibly Orange. When you call a cab company, they'll tell you. There's also a shuttle ($25) that goes from the airport to the base.

Junior87 - I don't go until July, but thanks for the offer.

SeminoleFan - Good to know, I appreciate it.

So you all may have seen this website already, but it explains some things about ODS: http://www.ocs.navy.mil/ods.asp

Keep in mind that it's a website for all their training schools, including OCS, so some of it may not apply to you. You can stay in King Hall on Saturday - most of my company was already there by the time I got there Sat night. King Hall is a bit of a distance from the main gate, so if you end up in a taxi that can't get on base you can call for a van, which is what I did. Here's the info from the website above about that:

"Airport based taxis will not be able to deliver you past the front gate. In this instance, please contact the OTC Command Duty Officer (CDO) and ask if the Command Duty Driver is available to pick up and transport you to the command. Since the command only has one duty driver, this may not be available, and you may have to walk to the designated location. The Command Duty Officer contact number is 401-862-4321."

The base is a little confusing at night if you haven't been there, so I would recommend against walking from the front gate to King Hall. I found that after I landed at the airport most of the people asking about a taxi were going to the base, so we formed a small group, shared a taxi and called the duty driver when we got there. Make sure you have a copy of your orders and an ID - you'll need both to get on base.

Can you drive your own car and park on base ?

Yes. I didn't do it, so I don't know for sure, but you probably have to get a tag of some sort (usually requires going to a security office and showing your registration/insurance/driver's license). If it's not outlined in orders or on the website, I would ask when you check in just to be safe.

Hows it going people any insights...anything you wish you knew ahead of time ...anything you should've brought ???
