Article about Karmanos Cancer - Wayne State/DMC

For not entirely clear to me reasons, free-standing cancer centers are having hard time balancing their bottom lines.

It's because of the way free-standing vs hospital-based centers are reimbursed. It's been a stacked deck against freestanding centers, particularly within the last few years, which is why many in the freestanding community are making the push for bundled payments, something that ASTRO opposes

Yeah, but we are talking cancer hospitals, not solo RadOnc centers . One would imagine Karmanos, FCCC or MDA can figure this out.

It is my understanding that they bill like a regular hospital-based center if the free-standing center is completely owned by the hospital and it's located within a certain mileage from the main hospital
